Saturday’s battling display at Exeter saw Grimsby Town snatch their fourth win on the bounce and move the Mariners within six points of a play-off position.
After an indifferent start, Michael Jolley seems to be finding his feet as a League Two manager and the spirit and togetherness shown by his young, injury-hit side in the south-west appears to bode well for a strong second half of the season and an outside chance of getting in the top seven.
January will be crucial to Grimsby’s hopes as the fixture list gives the most-improved side in the division the chance to pit their wits against all the current top three. New Years Day sees them entertain Mansfield Town, and in a busy month which also sees them play Crystal Palace in the FA Cup, host Macclesfield and travel to Forest Green, they have the short trip to Lincoln for the Lincolnshire Derby to contend with and end the month with the visit of MK Dons to Blundell Park.
By the time the days start getting longer, Grimsby supporters will have a better idea just how far they have progressed in the past year, and the form of Jolley’s young side will have had a big say in how the top three is looking as we approach the run-in.
Our View
Grimsby Town is a well-supported club who failed to kick on in the manner of their neighbours Lincoln City after promotion from the National League. Recent hostility between supporters and the board seems to have abated with an upturn in results. If Michael Jolley steers them through January with a reasonable return of points and manages to strengthen the squad, their long-suffering supporters may have something to cheer about come May.
