Walsall midfielder Josh Ginnelly is closing in on a switch to Preston North End, with Dean Keates leaving him out of the squad this weekend in readiness for a move.
The former Burnley man has been in superb form for the Saddlers this season, with a number of eye-catching displays on the flank. He’s weighed in with assists and goals, but missed this weekend’s game as speculation mounts around a Championship move.
Keates confirmed that Ginnelly, who has earned National League promotion with Lincoln and Tranmere in successive seasons, has been the subject of a bid.
“Josh is not here today – there are one or two things going on,” he said after the 1-1 draw with Peterborough. “We have had an offer for him and I had to make a decision that was best for the group. He hasn’t travelled with us.”
“A concrete offer has been tabled and I had to make a decision for the football club and I think that was justified today. What happens over the next two weeks with Josh will happen.”
Ginnelly has scored twice in 21 matches for the Saddlers this season.
Our View
Ginnelly has been solid for Walsall this season and has been ‘one to watch’ for a few seasons now. He’s impressed at Shrewsbury, Lincoln and Tranmere, but never seems to settle.
This is a risky swoop by Preston but with the time the players get on the ball at that level, he could be about to find a suitable level for his speed.
