Steven Gerrard has been boosted by reports that Gillingham striker Tom Eaves does not want to sign a new deal, amid rumours he’s wanted at Ibrox.
The Scottish Sun reports that 13-goal Eaves will not pen a new deal with the Gills, fuelling rumours he is one his way to the Scottish Premier League side.
He’s being chased by the Ibrox giants, as well as rumoured interest from Millwall. Wherever he goes, it does seem as though his time at Priestfield is coming to an end, which will be a big blow to Gillingham’s hopes of survival in League One.
The Gills are currently seven points clear of the bottom three, but with speculation mounting, they could choose to cash in on their asset ahead of him leaving for free. He would command a nominal fee in the transfer window, giving them at least a small amount to spend on a possible replacement.
Eaves has been in great form for Steve Lovell’s side this season, capping off a good spell with the club he joined on a free transfer after being released from Yeovil in the summer of 2016.
Our View
This could be a fatal blow for Gillingham. Eaves is a talisman and whilst there’s quality in the squad, his goals have masked an inconsistency that will keep them in the bottom half of the table.
If he were to wait until the end of the season, would they see the best of him with his contract winding down?
Or, if a move is happening, would it be best all round to get it done in January and let the Gills find a replacement?
