Joe Dunne full of apologies after Guiseley debacle

Cambridge manager Joe Dunne is clearly under pressure, with his side’s recent run of good form coming to a crashing stop against Guiseley.

The National League North side raced into a four-goal lead against The U’s, condemning them to a first round exit.

It wasn’t just the defeat that hurt, but the manner in which is players seemed to give up early on. Only a late rally brought some respectability to the scoreline.

Even Guiseley assistant Marcus Bignot said if the game had gone on another ten minutes, his side would have lost, but the U’s players showed little commitment before the rousing end.

Dunne was forced to apologise after the game, saying: “I can only apologise for putting ourselves in a 4-0 scoreline, going late into the game. It should never have happened. We’re deeply, deeply disappointed.”

“The only thing I can say is, as a club, as fans, we’ll stick together through this, and we’ll all see who can react from it.”

“We’ll all see what player decides to stand up, and we’ll see what player wants to get out, and we’ll see what player has no fight, and we’ll see who has some fight.”

Cambridge are currently 19th in League Two, seven points clear of the drop zone.

Our View

These are desperate times at the Abbey Stadium, some decent form has alleviated the pressure recently, but it’s now been piled right back on the manager after the gutless display at Nethermoor.

The Real EFL will be very surprised if Dunne makes it through to Christmas, if his players turn in many more performances as bad as Saturday, he’ll be opening his advent calendar as an unemployed man.
