Gillingham boss Steve Lovell thought his side were magnificent, despite losing 4-2 to leaders Peterborough at Priestfield this weekend.
The Gills fought back from 1-0 down to take a 2-1 lead against the high-flying Posh, but ended up on the wrong side of a 4-2 defeat.
It was a brave performance against a well-funded side who will almost certainly be in the top six come May and Lovell was happy with his players efforts.
“From the Gillingham end, we put in a good performance,” he told the club’s website. “I take a lot of heart and a lot of positives from today. I’m miserable because we didn’t get the result, but not the performance.”
“We have got to do better when we’re in possession of the ball, especially with the boys that they had – they’re very quick on the counter attack.”
Siriki Dembele shone for the visitors and his performance helped them get back into the game a 2-1, but Lovell said he trusts his players to avert their bad run of form. they’ve lost five on the spin in all competitions.
“We will get out of it [current form]. Our boys are fantastic lads – they work and they give everything.”
Our View
At the beginning of the season, we feared for Gillingham, but after an explosive start they looked to be putting things right.
Their recent form is worrying, but they were brave against Posh and should surely be able to turn that into positive results.
