Pompey assistant manager hails unsung midfield hero

Joe Gallen has heaped praise on home-grown midfielder Ben Close after his performance helped to defeat Peterborough United in the weekend’s big game.

Going into the tie, Peterborough were the league leaders, but Pompey put them to the sword with a ruthless and clinical display.

Gallen believes that the midfielder deserves special praise for his role in the 2-1 victory.

“I thought Ben did very well against Peterborough, he is a very good player,” he told local media. “He doesn’t maybe get the plaudits or the song from the fans, but I have a lot of time personally for him.”

The 22-year old has appeared of 50 times for Pompey, but has also enjoyed loans with Poole and Eastleigh. He’s now looking to establish himself in the side, something Gallen can see happening.

“He’s very easy to manage, easy to get along with and very calm, making very good decisions, particularly in a tense atmosphere. I think he has a good career ahead of him. Ben has some things to work on, undoubtedly, but he does bring some decision making and calmness.”

Close just edged out Ben Thompson this weekend, but both players have a different type of game that will be required at various times this season.

Pompey looked very assured in what was surely their sternest test of the season so far. They could be set for a Championship return in the near future.
