‘The title is yours’ – Not The Top 20 Pod award Lincoln City League Two already

The popular podcast ‘NTT20’ has awarded Lincoln City the League Two title already, asking on this week’s episode which two sides look likely to join them in the automatic promotion spots.

The Imps have set the early pace in League Two, remaining unbeaten after six games having dropped just two points all season. This weekend they faced Exeter City, the side who beat them in the play offs last season. They swept them aside 3-0.

So far this season they’ve also beaten Swindon 4-1, Notts County 3-1 and won convincingly in the League Cup at Port Vale, 4-0. That was their biggest win ever at Vale Park.

Danny and Nicky Cowley have done a phenomenal job at Sincil Bank, taking them from midtable obscurity in the National league to the top of League Two in just over two seasons. During that time they’ve been in the FA Cup quarter-final, the FA Trophy semi-final and won the Checkatrade Trophy. They lifted the National League title and last season finished seventh in League Two.

Their squad has been partially overhauled, with lower league legend John Akinde joining in the summer. He’s currently on five goals already as he sets about paying off a club record fee.

There’s a long way to go in the season, but the NTT20 pod tends to be well-informed and accurate, with host Ally Maxwell moving swiftly passed Lincoln this week as if to admit their promotion was already assured!

Our View

It is a long season and Lincoln City have started well, but nothing is won and lost in August. We’re sure the skipping over them was purely theatre for the podcast and they will be natural favourites for the title now, but anything can happen in football.

If they stay injury free and hang on to their top players in January, then there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be playing League One football in twelve month’s time. However, there’ plenty of sides who want to shoot them down, including manager-less Crawley and their former striker Ollie Palmer, who visit Sincil Bank this Saturday.
