Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town are interested in signing former Norwich City midfielder Wes Hoolahan, who has been without a club since the end of last season.
The 36-year old was released from Carrow Road last season, but the League One side are now interested in adding his vast experience to their ranks, according to a report from HITC.
He made 352 appearances for the canaries in a long and distinguished career, having originally joined them from Blackpool in 2008. He also appeared 43 times for the Republic of Ireland.
Joey Barton is now believed to be keen on taking Hoolahan to Highbury as he looks to make a mark in his first managerial role. The report suggests Hoolahan could be offered a short-term contract with the League One club, with Barton believing that his experience and creativity could prove invaluable to his side.
Barton’s early season form has been good, with the Cod Army picking up four points from three games in a tough looking League One. They’ve beaten Oxford and drawn with Rochdale, but face Scunthorpe in a fixture this evening.
Barton is only 35 himself and to add Hoolahan to his team would bring some vital experience and know how. The former Livingston player has served Norwich well and knows what it takes to be a success in the game.
Surely, any move would be a precursor to him joining the back room staff as at 36 he only has a year or two left playing, at most.
