Our Three Predictions For Charlton Athletic vs Southampton

  • First Prediction: Southampton – Draw No Bet – 17/20
  • Second Prediction: Both Teams To Score – 4/5
  • Third Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals – 11/10

First Prediction For Charlton Athletic vs Southampton – Southampton – Draw No Bet – 17/20

Charlton have enjoyed an excellent return to the Championship following their promotion from League One last season. They currently sit ninth in the table and just 2 points off the play-off places.

The Addicks have been particularly strong at home, with only Leicester City leaving The Valley with all 3 points. Other than that, Swansea City did secure a draw on their visit to the capital last month.

A few weeks ago, packing Charlton would have been a formality. Southampton were struggling to adjust to life under Will Still, but the 33-year-old found himself cast aside following a 2-0 defeat against Preston North End at St Mary’s on November 2nd.

Since then, the Saints have galvanised and picked up back-to-back wins for the first time this season prior to the international break. This includes an excellent 2-1 away victory at Queens Park Rangers. This could follow suit, although backing them on a draw no bet option would see your stake returned if the scores end level.

Second Prediction For Charlton Athletic vs Southampton – Both Teams To Score – 4/5

Only Stoke City have been involved in less games than Charlton where both teams have scored. Just 40% of their fixtures have achieved this feat, although this does increase slightly to 43% at The Valley.

Although they edged past West Bromwich Albion by a single goal in their last home outing, they scored and conceded in their 2 games in front of their own supporters prior to that.

In stark contrast, Southampton have hit this market in 80% of their league games to date. However, that figure increases to a whopping 100% when playing away from St Mary’s.

Third Prediction For Charlton Athletic vs Southampton – Over 2.5 Goals – 11/10

From a neutral perspective, Charlton are perhaps the dullest side to watch in the Championship so far this season. No other team has been involved in more low scoring affairs, with just 4 of their 15 fixtures producing 3 or more goals.

This is similar at The Valley, with 3-0 and 2-1 wins over Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday respectively going over this market. However, Southampton will produce a much sterner test for their defence.

Games involving the Saints have produced a whopping 39 goals to date, with 60% of their outings going over 2.5 goals. Similar to the both teams to score prediction though, this increases when away from home to 75%.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:

Charlton have been excellent since returning to the division following their League One play-off final victory over Leyton Orient in May. They’ve lost just 4 league games so far this season, although they were beaten by Wrexham (1-0) prior to the international break to end a 5-game unbeaten run.

This saw the Addicks pick up excellent wins over Sheffield Wednesday (2-1), Ipswich Town (3-0) and West Bromwich Albion (1-0). The other 2 games ended in 1-1 draws against Hull City and Swansea City. As a result, Nathan Jones’ team sit ninth and just 2 points off the play-off places.

Southampton dropped to the second tier after one of the worst Premier League seasons on record. Amassing a mere 12 points, they were still heavily back to launch a promotion challenge following the appointment of the highly rated Will Still in the summer.

It’s fair to say things haven’t gone to plan. After coming from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Wrexham on the opening day, the Saints then won just 1 of their next 12, eventually leading to Still’s dismissal.

Under the interim stewardship of Tonda Eckert, the Hampshire-based side look to have recovered slightly over the last 2 games. They head to the capital having won back-to-back games for the first time this season, picking up maximum points hauls against Queens Park Rangers (2-1) and Sheffield Wednesday (3-1).

This is the first meeting between the pair since 2011, when they were both in League One. Southampton won the last clash 2-0 at St Mary’s and are unbeaten in their last 5 against the Addicks.

Charlton’s last victory in this fixture came in 2009, although they haven’t beaten the Saints at The Valley since they were both in the Premier League in 2004. Overall, Southampton have the stronger record here, winning 28 of the previous 63 meetings. Charlton have 18 victories whilst they have played out 17 draws, the last of which came in March 2011.
