Southampton will look to kick start their Championship campaign when they welcome Preston North End to St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.
Our Three Predictions For Southampton vs Preston North End
- First Prediction:Ā Southampton To Win – 4/6
- Second Prediction:Ā Both Teams To Score – 10/11
- Third Prediction:Ā Over 2.5 Goals – 10/11
First Prediction For Southampton vs Preston North End – Southampton To Win – 4/6
If there is ever a team that need a win, it’s Southampton. Having been relegated from the Premier League in May, the appointment of Will Still saw the Saints return to the Championship as one of the favourites for promotion.
It’s far from gone to plan though. The Hampshire-based side have won just once since beating Wrexham on the opening day and are yet to pick up a victory in October. As a result, Still finds himself under serious pressure already.
It’s worth noting that 3 of Southampton’s 4 games this month have come away from home, with their one outing at St Mary’s producing a 0-0 draw with Swansea City. In fact, the only game they’ve lost in front of their own supporters came in August when they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Stoke City.
Preston sit on the fringes of the play-off positions, although this is mainly down to their form at Deepdale. Four of their 5 wins this season have come at home, with a narrow 1-0 victory at Derby County their only 3 points on the road.
This seems like the perfect opportunity for Southampton to settle some nerves.
Second Prediction For Southampton vs Preston North End – Both Teams To Score – 10/11
Southampton’s inconsistencies mean that this is a prediction which usually delivers. No other team in the Championship has been involved in more games where both teams have scored, with 10 of their 12 outings this season having achieved this feat.
The 2 exceptions have both finished 0-0, although both of those did come at St Mary’s against Portsmouth and Swansea City respectively.
Preston rank fairly low in this market, with 50% of their fixtures thus far seeing the score and concede in the same game. However, this rises to 60% when away from Deepdale.
The Lillywhites lost their last away outing 2-1 to West Bromwich Albion, whilst they picked up a point at the MKM Stadium with a 2-2 draw at Hull City. They head into this game having beaten Sheffield United 3-2 last week.
Third Prediction For Southampton vs Preston North End – Over 2.5 Goals – 10/11
When it comes to games that have seen at least 3 goals, Southampton are bettered only by Hull, Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City. They have hit this marker in 58% of their league fixtures to date, although this does fall to 40% at St Mary’s.
Despite that, this is a must-win game for Will Still. Their defensive issues mean they are likely to need to score at least twice to do so, especially because Preston usually score away from home.
The Lilywhites have failed to find the back of the net on their travels just once this season. That came in a 1-0 defeat at Portsmouth in August.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Southampton’s woes this season have been well documented. It was thought they had landed a major coup in the summer by securing the services of Will Still, but the former Reims boss has struggled to adjust to life in English football.
It started well enough with a 2-1 win over newly promoted Wrexham on the opening day, although they did have to rely on 2 added time goals to pick up the 3 points. The Saints have won just once since though, which came at Bramall Lane when they beatĀ Sheffield UnitedĀ at the end of September.
The Hampshire-based side head into this game on a 4-game winless streak. This has seen them lose their last 2 against Bristol City (3-1) and Blackburn Rovers (2-1), despite taking the lead in both.
Preston have enjoyed a steady opening quarter of the season and currently sit in seventh, just outside the play-off places. However, an unbeaten September did see them move into the top 6.
October has been inconsistent. They began the month with a comfortable 2-0 home win over Charlton Athletic, but then lost back-to-back games against West Bromwich Albion (2-1) and Birmingham City (1-0).
Paul Heckingbottom’s side showed their grit in their last outing though. They found themselves 2 goals down within 16 minutes against Sheffield United last Friday, but went on to win 3-2.
Southampton head into this game with an excellent recent record against Preston, having won 4 of the last 5 meetings. This includes their last clash at St Mary’s which ended 3-0 to the Saints in April 2024.
It’s been nearly 18 years since the Lilywhites have picked up a victory in this fixture, with 2007 seeing them beat the Saints 3 times. Overall, it is Southampton who edge the head-to-head, having won 16 of the previous 44 meetings. Preston have emerged victorious 14 times whilst the pair have also played out 14 draws, the last of which came in 2023.
