Preston sit on the fringes of the play-off positions, although this is mainly down to their form at Deepdale. Four of their 5 wins this season have come at home, with a narrow 1-0 victory at Derby County their only 3 points on the road.

The Lillywhites lost their last away outing 2-1 to West Bromwich Albion, whilst they picked up a point at the MKM Stadium with a 2-2 draw at Hull City. They head into this game having beaten Sheffield United 3-2 last week.

When it comes to games that have seen at least 3 goals, Southampton are bettered only by Hull, Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City. They have hit this marker in 58% of their league fixtures to date, although this does fall to 40% at St Mary’s.
Despite that, this is a must-win game for Will Still. Their defensive issues mean they are likely to need to score at least twice to do so, especially because Preston usually score away from home.
The Lilywhites have failed to find the back of the net on their travels just once this season. That came in a 1-0 defeat at Portsmouth in August.

Southampton’s woes this season have been well documented. It was thought they had landed a major coup in the summer by securing the services of Will Still, but the former Reims boss has struggled to adjust to life in English football.

Preston have enjoyed a steady opening quarter of the season and currently sit in seventh, just outside the play-off places. However, an unbeaten September did see them move into the top 6.
October has been inconsistent. They began the month with a comfortable 2-0 home win over Charlton Athletic, but then lost back-to-back games against West Bromwich Albion (2-1) and Birmingham City (1-0).
