Our 3 Predictions For Cheltenham Town vs Walsall:

  • 1st Prediction For Cheltenham Town vs Walsall: Match Result – Draw – 12/5
  • 2nd Prediction For Cheltenham Town vs Walsall: Under 2.5 Goals – 8/11
  • 3rd Prediction For Cheltenham Town vs Walsall: Both Teams To Score – Yes – 17/20

1st Prediction For Cheltenham Town vs Walsall: Match Result – Draw – 12/5

After losing their first 3 games at home this season, Cheltenham have responded with 2 victories in their past 3 league encounters in Gloucestershire. That is part of their improved run of form since Steve Cotterill was re-appointed at the end of September. Unbeaten in 3 fourth-tier matches, the Robins have climbed out of the relegation places in League Two.

Likewise, Walsall responded to losing their first away game of the season by going 5 unbeaten on the road. Sitting 5th in the away standings, only 3 teams have recorded more points, despite playing 1 match fewer than plenty of sides around them. But, the West Midlands outfit are now winless in 3 games across all competitions.

Given the home side’s rise in form, and a slight dip for the league leaders, expect a closely-fought game that should end in a draw.

2nd Prediction For Cheltenham Town vs Walsall: Under 2.5 Goals – 8/11

Cheltenham are the joint lowest scorers at home this season in the fourth tier with 4 goals, and across all venues they are bottom with 9. But, in their last encounter in Gloucestershire, the Robins managed to double their tally by beating Fleetwood Town 2-0. But, in spite of their relative struggles on their own patch this season, they have only conceded 8 times.

Despite being top of the division, the Saddlers have only managed 8 goals in 6 away fixtures this term, 5 behind Tranmere Rovers, who top this particular table. But, in 3 of their last 4 games, Mat Sadler’s side have scored only once on the road. As a result, expect this to be a relatively low-scoring fixture.

3rd Prediction For Cheltenham Town vs Walsall: Both Teams To Score – Yes – 17/20

In Cheltenham’s 4 October games to date, 3 of them have seen only 1 side find the net. That has been a consistent theme throughout the campaign thus far, with the same occurrence last month in 4 of their 5 matches across all competitions. In fact, of their 17 encounter this term, only 4 have seen both teams score.

Walsall have failed to keep a clean sheet since beating Chesterfield at the start of September, the final of 3 games in which they had kept the opposition out. But, in their last 6 League Two games, the Saddlers and their opponents have found the back of the net. With that in mind, expect both teams to score once again this Saturday.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:

Since Steve Cotterill was re-appointed as Cheltenham Town boss, only 2 sides have picked up more points in the last 3 games in League Two. Defeating Fleetwood Town at the start of October was only their second victory of the season, and they looked to be heading for successive victories after Sam Sherring struck late at Gillingham. But, the Gills scored even later to take a dramatic point.

That was followed up by a crucial three points at Newport County last Saturday, a result which moved them off the bottom of the table and out of the relegation zone. The Robins have a dead-rubber EFL Trophy fixture against Tottenham Hotspur next Tuesday evening, before hosting Bradford City in the FA Cup. Cheltenham face a 16-day wait for their next fourth-tier encounter, with a televised fixture against Notts County.

Walsall were dealt only their third loss of the season last Saturday, defeated for the first time in 9 matches against Barrow. That was the Saddlers’ third game in succession without winning, after being held by Crawley Town the week prior, along with losing to Northampton Town in the Vertu Trophy. Three successive victories before that had seen them rise to the top of the table, beating Tranmere Rovers, Accrington Stanley and Bristol Rovers.

During the opening month of the campaign, Mat Sadler’s outfit had seen off fellow promotion hopefuls Salford City and Milton Keynes Dons without conceding. Looking ahead, Walsall face a crunch EFL Trophy tie against Chelsea U21’s in midweek, before another cup encounter against Eastleigh in the oldest national football competition in the world. Basement side Newport County are next up in League Two in 2 weekends’ time.

First clashing in an EFL Trophy encounter in 2004, Cheltenham lead the head-to-head by a single victory. After the Saddlers won 3 in a row, the Robins rampaged to 5 successive victories, after this fixture had a 10-year hiatus. Last season, Walsall won for the first time in 8 meetings, before a 2-2 draw in February.
