Our Three Predictions For Sheffield United vs Southampton
- First Prediction: Match Result – Draw – 23/10
- Second Prediction: Both Teams To Score – 3/4
- Third Prediction: Under 2.5 Goals – 4/5
First Prediction For Sheffield United vs Southampton – Match Result – Draw – 23/10
It’s fair to say that both teams haven’t endured the start they envisaged they would have prior to the beginning of the campaign. Sheffield United were last season’s beaten play-off finalists having secured a third-placed finish. That defeat at Wembley Stadium cost Chris Wilder his job and he was immediately replaced by former Hull City and Reading boss Ruben Selles. However, the Spaniard’s tenure was an absolute disaster and after losing all six of their opening games in all competitions, he too found himself cast aside. The Blades returned to Wilder with their tails between their legs, and the 58-year-old finally delivered their first win – and points – of the season with a 1-0 win over Oxford United on Saturday. They do remain bottom of the table though and the visit of Southampton welcomes an opportunity to build on their recent victory.
The Saints have also struggled this season. Having been relegated from the Premier League in May, they secured a coup by bringing in the highly rated Will Still as manager. He delivered a win in his first competitive game with a late turnaround against Wrexham. However, that remains their only victory in the Championship to date. Despite that, Southampton have been relatively tough to beat. They’ve lost just twice in the league and picked up a respectable point against table toppers Middlesbrough on Saturday. With five draws to their name, another here is highly possible.
Second Prediction For Sheffield United vs Southampton – Both Teams To Score – 3/4
Sheffield United have been incredibly disappointing in front of goal this season and have found the back of the net just twice. The first of those came in their opening day defeat against Bristol City, which finished 4-1 at Bramall Lane. They had to wait all the way to this last weekend for their second goal of the campaign when they finally picked up a win by beating Oxford United 1-0 at the Kassam Stadium. Still, it’s worth remembering that five of their seven league outings were under Ruben Selles, and Chris Wilder has installed somewhat of a lift. Having conceded in all-but-one of their fixtures in all competitions, another shut out is unlikely.
Despite their lowly position, Southampton certainly know how to score. The only game which has seen them fail to net was a 0-0 draw against rivals Portsmouth earlier this month. However, that is also the only game in which they have kept a clean sheet. Will Still’s team have been particularly disappointing on the road and have conceded five in their last two fixtures away from St Mary’s.
Third Prediction For Sheffield United vs Southampton – Under 2.5 Goals – 4/5
Although we expect both teams to score, we also expect this to fall under the 2.5 goal marker. Effectively, we see this game ending 1-1.
Despite their lowly position, Sheffield United aren’t a team which traditionally have high scoring games. This was also true of Chris Wilder’s previous tenure and has been the same again this season. Both of his games this season have finished 1-0, with one ending in defeat and one ending in a win. The Blades also suffered three successive 1-0 losses under Ruben Selles against Swansea City, Millwall and Middlesbrough.
Southampton have been involved in games which have featured three or more goals in four of their seven league outings thus far. However, two of their last three have been low scoring affairs having drawn 0-0 with Portsmouth and 1-1 with Middlesbrough. They’re going to come up against another tough defence here.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Sheffield United have endured an odd few months since the end of last season. Having finished third in last season’s Championship with a staggering 90 points (92 excluding a points deduction), they entered the play-offs as the favourites to join Leeds United and Burnley in the Premier League. They eased through the semi final stage with a 6-0 aggregate win over Bristol City, but were stunned in the final when Sunderland came from behind to secure a famous 2-1 win at Wembley. Bizarrely, this cost Chris Wilder his job and he was immediately replaced by Ruben Selles, who himself had just been sacked by Hull City. The Spaniard’s first competitive game saw the Blades renew acquaintances with Bristol City, but the Robins gained a bit of revenge with a thumping 4-1 win at Bramall Lane. This set the tone of Selles’ tenure and three successive 1-0 losses followed against Swansea City, Millwall and Middlesbrough. A 5-0 reverse at Ipswich Town after the international break spelled the end for the new head coach. Owners COH Sports returned to Wilder to revive their campaign and he has so far picked up a 1-0 defeat against Charlton Athletic before claiming their first win of the season against Oxford United on Saturday (1-0).
Southampton also entered a new era after Will Still was appointed as manager following their relegation from the Premier League The 32-year-old’s first game saw his team come from behind to grab two late goals to beat Wrexham on the opening day. However, that remains their only league win this season. They followed the victory over the Hollywood-backed side with a respectable 1-1 draw with fellow relegated outfit Ipswich Town. A 2-1 defeat at St Mary’s against high-flying Stoke City was disappointing whilst successive draws against Watford (2-2) and rivals Portsmouth (0-0) earned another two points. The Saints worst performance of the season thus far came at the MKM Stadium, where they lost 3-1 to Hull City. There was cause for optimism though when they were defeated by a late Hugo Ekiteke strike by champions Liverpool in the Carabao Cup before picking up another draw against Middlesbrough (1-1) at the weekend.
This will be the first meeting between the pair since 2021, where Southampton won on penalties following a 2-2 draw in the League Cup. In fact, the Saints have the better record in recent history, having won their previous four clashes in the league. Sheffield United last tasted victory against the Saints in 2014, again in the League Cup, but their last league win came in 2009. Overall, it is the Blades that edge the head-to-head record over the years, winning 25 of the previous 59 meetings. Southampton have won 21 and 13 have ended in a draw.
