Wigan Athletic v Cardiff City: Predictions, Lineups, and Odds (27/9)

Wigan Athletic have had a stuttering start to this season’s League One campaign, and will want to lay a marker down coming into the Autumn months. Their opponent in the match, Cardiff City, had a fast start but have slipped off the pace.

Our Three Predictions For Wigan Athletic v Cardiff City

Prediction 1 – Match To End In A Draw – 11/5

Prediction 2 – Under 2.5 Goals Scored – 13/20

Prediction 3 – Both Teams To Score – Yes – 3/4

First Prediction For Wigan Athletic v Cardiff City – Match To End In A Draw – 11/5

An even split so far for the home side. Wigan Athletic have played nine, and won, lost, and drawn three. This does mean that there are nowhere near where they want to be in the table, but does show they are equally hard to beat as they are likely to win. So, a draw may be the best offering here against a Cardiff City team that have dropped points in their last two matches after a great start. The visitors have yet to lose away from home, having won twice and drawn the same amount, but will want to right the ship after thy were rocked by Bradford City, 3-1, in their last league match. Both sides need a decent result, but also afraid to lose ground further, so a point apiece looks a good bet.

Second Prediction For Wigan Athletic v Cardiff City – Under 2.5 Goals Scored – 13/20

Given the consistentcy of how both teams are scoring, you may think these are crazy odds. Wigan have bagged 14 goals so far, with Cardiff just one behind, on 13. The visitors have one of the meanest defences in the division, with just five conceded overall and only one let in on the road. Shutting up shop has been a little more difficult for Wigan as they have conceded 13 in total, but at home they have only been breached twice. Their last encounter was back in January 2023, and that was a 1-1 draw, although obviously a lot has changed since then. But the nature of this game, and its timing, does mean that defence could well win out here, and Wigan will want to avoid another setback that Bolton Wanderers gave them in their last league match, a 4-1 beating. Look for a tight encounter with few goalmouth action.

Third Prediction For Wigan Athletic v Cardiff City – Both Teams To Score – Yes – 3/4

With a tight game predicted, and a draw quite possible, this doesn’t leave much room for both teams to score goals. That though as highlighted is something both are good at so far this season, easily averaging over a goal a game. If Wigan can find a way of keeping that up against a stubborn Cardiff defence then this could well be a good bet as the visitors look to build back some form after slipping from top spot in the early running.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head To Head

Ryan Lowe has to get more from his team than he is getting at the moment. There is potential in this Wigan Athletic side that is not coming through right now. They are as pretty much a mid-table team as you could get with an level spilt of three wins, draws, and losses, even their goalscoring is next to level with a -1 goal difference, They have a great chance to make a statement win here. Fraser Murray will be out to add to his three goals so far, and Paul Mullin has settled in well and also has a trio of goals. Veteran Welsh defender Morgan Fox is leading the back line well, but will need more help from Will Aimson and Steven Sessegnon if they are to keep Cardiff at bay.

Cardiff City have done what most thought they would. Adjusted well to League One football and staked an early claim for promotion contender. Staying the course is somewhat different though, and the last couple of games, against teams that also consider themselves promotion hopefuls haven’t gone to plan, and they have relinquished top spot. There are still lots of positives for Brian Barry-Murphy to take from the opening weeks, as they also have a last 16 game in the Carabao Cup to look forward to against rival Welsh side Wrexham. Ruben Colwill has proven to be the standout player so far, with consistent forward play he has scored three and bagged an assist too. Extra firepower up front from Yousef Salech, the 22 year old Danish striker has a brace of goals, and an assist also. At the back the are very tight and have one of the leagues best goalkeepers in Nathan Trott.
