That’s pretty much as good as it has got for the Saints though. They enter this game on a run of five league games without a win with three draws and two defeats. A 3-1 loss at Hull City last weekend saw them crash to 19th, although there was positives from a 2-1 defeat at Premier League champions Liverpool on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough have been flying under Rob Edwards and currently sit top of the Championship. They’ve dropped points in just one fixture, with that being a 2-2 draw at Preston North End earlier this month. Aside from that, they’ve picked up impressive wins on the road against Millwall and Norwich City and will be confident they can extend that run against a struggling Southampton side. Full Preview of the Game: Last Results and Head-To-Head
Southampton had to dig deep on the opening day when Wrexham visited St Mary’s. The Hollywood-backed team looked to be on course to recording a famous victory in their first game back in the second tier, but Ryan Manning and Jack Stephens both struck late to pick up the three points. That’s as good as it’s got for Will Still though. They followed that game with a respectable 1-1 draw at fellow relegated side Ipswich Town but then lost 2-1 at home to Stoke City. The Saints then picked up successive draws against Watford (2-2) and Portsmouth (0-0) but last weekend’s 3-1 loss against Hull City at the MKM Stadium was a bitter disappointment. There was cause for optimism on Tuesday though when they pushed Premier League giants Liverpool all the way in the Carabao Cup third round. A late Hugo Ekitike goal was needed to see the champions progress.
Middlesbrough are absolutely flying at the top of the Championship and have already opened up a four point lead over second-placed Stoke City. Rob Edwards won his first four competitive games in charge with victories over Swansea City (1-0), Millwall (3-0), Norwich City (2-1) and Sheffield United (1-0). Boro then dropped their first points of the campaign when Sontje Hansen struck a 92nd minute equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw at Preston North End. They soon returned to winning ways though, beating West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium last weekend.
The last fixture between these two occurred in March 2024 at St Mary’s, with the score finishing 1-1. Middlesbrough won 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium earlier that season in what was their first meeting since 2017, when the pair were in the Premier League. Southampton won both games that season, winning 1-0 at home and 2-1 away. Overall, it is the Saints that have the stronger record in this fixture, winning 25 of the previous 59 clashes.
