First Prediction For Southampton vs Middlesbrough – Middlesbrough – Draw No Bet – 11/10
Both teams entered this season at the beginning of a new era having opted to bring fresh faces into the dugout over the summer. However, it’s fair to say the pair have had contrasting fortunes. Will Still arrived at St Mary’s with a big reputation. He became the youngest manager in Europe’s top five leagues when he took over French outfit Reims aged just 30 in 2022. Once linked to Sunderland, he then joined Lens in 2024, leaving after just one season to take on the role at Southampton. His first competitive game saw him come from behind to secure a late 2-1 win over Wrexham on the opening day before progressing in the Carabao Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over League One outfit Northampton Town. That’s pretty much as good as it has got for the Saints though. They enter this game on a run of five league games without a win with three draws and two defeats. A 3-1 loss at Hull City last weekend saw them crash to 19th, although there was positives from a 2-1 defeat at Premier League champions Liverpool on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough have been flying under Rob Edwards and currently sit top of the Championship. They’ve dropped points in just one fixture, with that being a 2-2 draw at Preston North End earlier this month. Aside from that, they’ve picked up impressive wins on the road against Millwall and Norwich City and will be confident they can extend that run against a struggling Southampton side. Protecting your stake with a draw no bet option still offers returns of over evens and will see your outlay returned if the scores end level.
Second Prediction For Southampton vs Middlesbrough – Both Teams To Score – 13/20
Despite their struggles, only one team have stopped Southampton scoring this season. This includes Premier League champions Liverpool, who had to rely on a late goal to secure a 2-1 win in midweek. It’s the Saints’ back line which is causing issues, where they have conceded nine times in six league outings. Their 0-0 draw with Portsmouth is the only game they’ve been involved in in the Championship that hasn’t seen both teams score.
Middlesbrough have a 50% record in this market this season, having kept three clean sheets in six games. However, three of their last four outings have seen both teams score, a run which includes their last two away games.
Third Prediction For Southampton vs Middlesbrough – Over 2.5 Goals – 4/5
This is another market in which Southampton have delivered this season. Just two of their six league fixtures have seen under three goals, with that being the aforementioned 0-0 draw against rivals Portsmouth, as well as a 1-1 tie against Ipswich Town. Two of their last three games have seen four goals, whilst their first two games at St Mary’s this season saw three.
Like their opponents, Middlesbrough are also four from six when it comes to games that have seen three or more goals. 1-0 wins over Swansea City and Sheffield United are the only anomalies. All three of Boro’s trips away from the Riverside Stadium have been relatively high scoring affairs, with their last seeing a 2-2 draw at Deepdale against Preston North End. The other two saw them win 2-1 and 3-0 against Norwich City and Millwall respectively.

Full Preview of the Game: Last Results and Head-To-Head
Southampton had to dig deep on the opening day when Wrexham visited St Mary’s. The Hollywood-backed team looked to be on course to recording a famous victory in their first game back in the second tier, but Ryan Manning and Jack Stephens both struck late to pick up the three points. That’s as good as it’s got for Will Still though. They followed that game with a respectable 1-1 draw at fellow relegated side Ipswich Town but then lost 2-1 at home to Stoke City. The Saints then picked up successive draws against Watford (2-2) and Portsmouth (0-0) but last weekend’s 3-1 loss against Hull City at the MKM Stadium was a bitter disappointment. There was cause for optimism on Tuesday though when they pushed Premier League giants Liverpool all the way in the Carabao Cup third round. A late Hugo Ekitike goal was needed to see the champions progress.
Middlesbrough are absolutely flying at the top of the Championship and have already opened up a four point lead over second-placed Stoke City. Rob Edwards won his first four competitive games in charge with victories over Swansea City (1-0), Millwall (3-0), Norwich City (2-1) and Sheffield United (1-0). Boro then dropped their first points of the campaign when Sontje Hansen struck a 92nd minute equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw at Preston North End. They soon returned to winning ways though, beating West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium last weekend.
The last fixture between these two occurred in March 2024 at St Mary’s, with the score finishing 1-1. Middlesbrough won 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium earlier that season in what was their first meeting since 2017, when the pair were in the Premier League. Southampton won both games that season, winning 1-0 at home and 2-1 away. Overall, it is the Saints that have the stronger record in this fixture, winning 25 of the previous 59 clashes. Boro have won 18 times whilst 16 have ended in a draw.
