Our Three Predictions For Ipswich Town vs Portsmouth
- First Prediction: Ipswich Town To Win – 23/50
- Second Prediction: Both Teams To Score – No – 9/10
- Third Prediction: Under 2.5 Goals – 1/1
First Prediction For Ipswich Town vs Portsmouth – Ipswich Town To Win – 23/50
There’s no doubting that it’s been a disappointing start to the season for Ipswich Town. Billed as one of the favourites to secure promotion to the Premier League before a ball was kicked, the Tractor Boys have won just one of their opening five games. Admittedly though, only one of those has ended in defeat. Kieran McKenna’s side were granted somewhat of a lifeline last weekend when they game against Blackburn Rovers was abandoned in the 80th minute. Ipswich were a goal and a man down at the time and it now seems likely that the fixture will be replayed in its entirety. Therefore, they technically have a chance to record back-to-back wins after they recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory over Sheffield United earlier this month.
Portsmouth do sit above Ipswich in the table having picked up wins over Oxford United and Preston North End thus far. However, they’ve not won on the road since the opening day and enter this game on a run of two games without a win. Last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Fratton Park against a struggling Sheffield Wednesday side was bitterly disappointing and they will have their work cut out to bounce back on their trip to Suffolk.
Second Prediction For Ipswich Town vs Portsmouth – Both Teams To Score – No – 9/10
This is a prediction aimed more at the away side than the home one. Ipswich have just one clean sheet to their name so far this season, including last weekend’s abandoned encounter with Blackburn. However, Rovers’ goal came from the penalty spot whilst they shut out Sheffield United the week prior during their emphatic win at Portman Road. In fact, three of the last four goals the Tractor Boys have conceded have come from penalties and there’s a feeling that if they stop fouling in the area, more clean sheets will follow.
Portsmouth have hardly set the world alight in front of goal, scoring four times in six games. They’ve drawn a blank in each of their last two league fixtures, a fact even more concerning when considering that they generated 35 shots on goal combined. Ipswich will be tough to break down, especially in front of their own supporters who are keen to see successive home victories.
Third Prediction For Ipswich Town vs Portsmouth – Under 2.5 Goals – 1/1
Although Ipswich’s last two completed fixtures both saw at least four goals, the three prior to that all fell under the 2.5 goal marker. They started the campaign with successive 1-1 draws before falling to a 1-0 defeat at Preston North End. They also drew 1-1 with League Two’s Bromley in the Carabao Cup before exiting the competition on penalties.
Despite Portsmouth’s troubles in front of goal, they are a tough nut to crack. They’ve conceded just five times thus far, with only one of their fixtures going over 2.5 goals. That game with a 2-1 defeat against Norwich City at Fratton Park, meaning all their away outings have been low scoring affairs. Their last game on the road saw them draw 0-0 with rivals Southampton, meaning this is likely to be a tense encounter settled by a moment of quality.

Full Preview of the Game: Last Results and Head-To-Head
Ipswich captured the hearts of the nation with their rise to the Premier League. Although they were instantly relegated from the top tier, they were widely praised for their performances, with manager Kieran McKenna elevating himself to one of the top young coaches in the country. As a result, they are expected to be challenging close to the top of the Championship this season. However, they haven’t enjoyed the best of starts and needed a late penalty to snatch a draw against Birmingham City on the opening day. Another 1-1 draw followed, this time against Southampton, before they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at Preston North End. The visit of Derby County was expected to give them their first win of the campaign, although it once again took a late spot kick to earn a point, this time finishing 2-2. The Tractor Boys responded in emphatic fashion though when they came away with a 5-0 victory over Sheffield United in a result which cost Ruben Selles his job. McKenna was then offered a lifeline of sorts last week when the clash against Blackburn Rovers was abandoned with 10 minutes remaining, with Ipswich trailing by a goal and having had centre-back Jacob Greaves sent off.
Portsmouth spent much of last season battling against relegation and are hoping for a more comfortable campaign this time around. The early signs were promising when they beat Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium by a single goal in their opening fixture. A first defeat followed when they lost 2-1 to Norwich City at Fratton Park, but a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion was a solid result. Pompey picked up their second maximum points haul with a narrow 1-0 win over Preston North End before a earning a 0-0 draw at rivals Southampton. Last weekend saw John Mousinho’s team pick up their most disappointing result so far when they lost 2-0 to struggling Sheffield Wednesday in front of their own supporters.
This is the first meeting between the pair since 2022 when they played out a 2-2 draw at Fratton Park. Portsmouth won their last visit to Portman Road 2-0, although that was in the EFL Trophy. Prior to that, Ipswich picked up a 3-2 win in League One in October 2022. Overall, the Tractor Boys have the stronger record in this fixture, winning 21 of the previous 52 encounters. Portsmouth have 17 victories whilst 14 have ended in a draw.
