Our Three Predictions For Walsall vs Tranmere Rovers

  • First Prediction: Walsall To Win – 9/10
  • Second Prediction: Both Teams To Score – 1/1
  • Third Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals – 5/4

First Prediction For Walsall vs Tranmere Rovers – Walsall To Win – 9/10

Walsall fans would have been forgiven for thinking how are they still in League Two after last season’s exploits. They were the runaway leaders for much of the campaign, even leading the division by 12 points as recent as January. Mat Sadler’s team fell off in spectacular fashion though to eventually finish fourth before losing in the play-off final to AFC Wimbledon. This season has started well though and they currently sit fourth in the table. They’ve won five of their eight games so far, picking up 16 points. One of their two defeats has come at home when they lost 1-0 to Grimsby Town. That aside though, the West Midlanders do seem to grind out results in front of their own fans, having beaten Swindon Town, Salford City and Chesterfield by narrow margins.

Tranmere enter this game on a run of three league games without a win, although they did pick up a point with a 1-1 home draw against Newport County last weekend. They did beat Crawley Town on their travels earlier in the campaign but lost 3-1 in their last away day to Salford City. Expect another home win here.

Second Prediction For Walsall vs Tranmere Rovers – Both Teams To Score – 1/1

This is a prediction aimed more at the away team than the home team. Walsall have kept three clean sheets in their last four, winning those three games 1-0. They did draw 1-1 with Fleetwood Town last weekend, but that is only one of three games which have seen both teams score.

Meanwhile, Tranmere have 11 goals to their name this season, which is the highest in the bottom half of League Two Despite that, it’s their defensive frailties which have let them down and Andy Crosby’s team have only been involved in two games this season that have seen two goals or less. Rovers have also been involved in games where both teams have scored in each of their last four outings in all competitions.

Third Prediction For Walsall vs Tranmere Rovers – Over 2.5 Goals – 5/4

Another prediction which is aimed both at Tranmere than Walsall. The Saddlers have been defensively excellent this season, conceding just five times. This is the joint lowest in League Two alongside Gillingham and Oldham Athletic. However, they’ve hardly been prolific in front of goal, scoring twice in just two games so far. This is likely to need to change when they welcome Rovers to The Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium.

Despite their lowly position, the stats speak for themselves when it comes to the Merseysiders. Simply put, they always score. All nine of their games in all competitions have seen them find the back of the net and they will be confident of extending this against one of the best defences in the league. As a result, Walsall are likely to need to score at least twice to pick up the three points.

Full Preview of the Game: Last Results and Head-To-Head

Walsall will be hoping to go one better this season after falling at the final hurdle in May. Despite having led the division for much of the campaign, they had to settle for a place in the play-offs, where they lost in the final to AFC Wimbledon. They started inconsistently, winning two and losing two of their opening four fixtures. They started by beating current leaders Swindon Town (2-1) but followed that with a 1-0 defeat at Gillingham. A trip to Barnet heralded a 2-1 success but the Saddlers will have been disappointed to go down by a single goal to Grimsby Town at the Bescot Stadium a week later. Three successive 1-0 wins followed against Salford City, Milton Keynes Dons and Chesterfield but their winning run came to an end last weekend with a 1-1 draw at Fleetwood Town.

After spending much of last season battling against relegation, this should be a more comfortable campaign for Tranmere. A four game unbeaten start saw them rise into the top half after two 1-1 draws against Colchester United and Gillingham, coupled with a 4-0 win over Shrewsbury Town and a 2-0 victory over Crawley Town. However, they faltered since, losing back-to-back games against Notts County (2-1) and Salford City (3-1) before another 1-1 draw with Fleetwood Town last weekend.

Tranmere’s last visit to the West Midlands last season saw them hammered 5-1 in January. However, they did win the reverse fixture at Prenton Park by a single goal in August 2024. Their last victory at the Bescot Stadium came in 2022, also by a 1-0 scoreline. Overall, there have been 83 prior meetings between the two, with Walsall winning 39, Tranmere 28 and 16 ending in a draw.
