Our Three Predictions For Sheffield United vs Charlton Athletic

  • First Prediction: Sheffield United To Win – 4/5
  • Second Prediction: Both Teams To Score – No – 17/20
  • Third Prediction: Under 2.5 Goals – 7/10

First Prediction For Sheffield United vs Charlton Athletic – Sheffield United To Win – 4/5

What a ride it’s been for Sheffield United fans over the past week! A 5-0 defeat against Ipswich Town last Friday saw the pressure mount on manager Ruben Selles to boiling point. By Sunday, he was gone. Rumours immediately surfaced that owners COH Sports Group were considering a dramatic U-turn to bring back former boss Chris Wilder, who had departed the club less than three months later. Fast forward 24 hours and the deal was complete. There is now a renewed optimism around Bramall Lane and the expectation is that they will pick up their first points of the season by dispatching a Charlton Athletic side that are drastically out of form. Although the same can be said for the home side, this is a new era and one which is likely to see a ‘new (old) manager bounce’.

Charlton returned to the Championship for the first time in five years after securing a dramatic League One play-off final win over Leyton Orient in May. They hit the ground running with a 1-0 win over Watford but have failed to record a victory since. A 0-0 draw with Bristol City was followed by back-to-back defeats against Leicester City and Queens Park Rangers. The Addicks picked up another point last weekend when they drew 1-1 with Millwall, but Sheffield United are arguably the team nobody would have wanted to play this weekend. A home win looks to be on the cards.

Second Prediction For Sheffield United vs Charlton Athletic – Both Teams To Score – No – 17/20

Sheffield United have only been involved in one league game that has seen both teams score this season. That came on the opening day when they were convincingly beaten 4-1 by Bristol City at Bramall Lane. Since then, they recorded three successive 1-0 defeats before last Friday’s stunning 5-0 loss at Portman Road against Ipswich Town. This may be a ‘new’ Sheffield United under Chris Wilder, but if we look at last season’s stats, the Blades ranked 22nd in this market in the division. Including the play-offs, only 19 of their 49 games saw both teams score.

Charlton rank slightly better than their opponents here, with their last two games seeing the Addicks both score and concede. However, they’ve scored just three goals all season, with only Sheffield United having scored less. Although it was a different division, Nathan Jones’ side were rarely involved in games with both teams scoring last season as well. Also including the play-offs, they achieved this feat in 20 of their 49 outings.

Third Prediction For Sheffield United vs Charlton Athletic – Under 2.5 Goals – 7/10

Between the two teams, only three games from 10 have produced three or more goals this season. Sheffield United’s 4-1 and 5-0 losses against Bristol City and Ipswich Town sandwiched three 1-0 losses, whilst Charlton’s only game to go over this mark was a 3-1 reverse at Queens Park Rangers.

Although winless in four, the Addicks are sound defensively and Chris Wilder knows his team may have to be patient to get their rewards. They build a reputation of doing just that last season, especially during the first half of the campaign when they built a reputation of grinding out 1-0 and 2-0 wins. Expect similar here, with the 57-year-old knowing three points will change the mood around the stadium after their dreadful start.

Full Preview of the Game: Last Results and Head-To-Head

Sheffield United’s start to the season has been well documented. After opting to part company with Chris Wilder in the summer, Ruben Selles was brought in to draft in a new era at Bramall Lane. Keen to build a new data driven model, fans were called to stay patient during a period of transition. However, patience ran out at an astronomical rate after a run of six defeats from six in all competitions. The Blades started the season with a 4-1 home loss against Bristol City before three successive 1-0 league reverses against Swansea City, Millwall and Middlesbrough. During this time, they exited the Carabao Cup at the first round stage as Birmingham City emerged with a 2-1 victory at St Andrew’s. The final nail in the coffin for Selles came last Friday as he watched his side ripped to shreds as Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town ran riot with a 5-0 win. This has led to the return of Wilder for a third time.

Charlton Athletic ended their five-year stay in League One in May when they edged past Leyton Orient in the play-off final. Their return to the Championship started excellently when they recorded a 1-0 win over Watford before earning a respectable point at Bristol City following a 0-0 draw. Back-to-back defeats followed, first going down 1-0 against Leicester City at The Valley, then losing 3-1 at Queens Park Rangers. Nathan Jones’ side recovered somewhat last weekend to pick up their fifth point of the campaign with a 1-1 home draw against Millwall.

This is the first meeting between the two teams since 2017 when Sheffield United were in League One. The Blades won 2-1 that day at Bramall Lane, whilst the previous clash during that season finished 1-1 at The Valley in November 2016. Charlton last beat the Yorkshire-based team in 2012 in a season where they won both meetings. Overall, United have won 29 of the previous 68 fixtures between the pair, with Charlton winning 21 and 18 ending in a draw.
