First Prediction For Newport County vs Gillingham: Match Result – Gillingham – 1/1
Gillingham are on the cusp on history this Saturday, looking to break their club record for games unbeaten. As a result, they are tucked comfortably inside the automatic promotion place, only behind leaders Swindon Town on goals scored. Newport are in contrasting form, ending a run of six straight losses last Saturday by taking a late point at Tranmere Rovers. That did lift them out of the relegation zone on goal difference after a dismal start to the season. Despite that horrific run, they have more than competed in every game this term, though expect the Gills to come out on top this weekend.
Second Prediction For Newport County vs Gillingham: Over 2.5 Goals – 21/20
Gillingham’s goalscoring has been really mixed. They didn’t lose a game in normal time during August, but only scored one goal in six of their seven encounters. But, they thrashed fellow promotion-chasing outfit Chesterfield four-one, beating Fulham U21’s by the same scoreline at the beginning of this month. Newport have struggled infront of goal, so expect the majority of goalmouth action to be in favour of the away side.
Third Prediction For Newport County vs Gillingham: Both Teams To Score – Yes – 17/20
No side have conceded fewer than the Gills five in eight games thus far this campaign. Newport have won each of the last six league encounters between the two sides, with three of the last four only seeing the Exiles on the scoresheet. Despite that run, expect the fortunes to change this weekend, and both sides should find the back of the net.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Newport have endured a dismal start to their League Two campaign. It’s been part of the bigger picture at Rodney Parade, where their form has dropped off a cliff since the end of the 2023/24 campaign. Another FA Cup run for the Exiles came at a cost, with their league form taking a significant hit with eight defeats in a row. While last term, in Nelson Jardim’s sole season in charge, the side from South Wales were battling at the wrong end of the division. Once their safety was secured, finishing in 22nd place, the Portuguese manager left Newport by mutual consent. In his place this year is David Hughes, who left a coaching role at Manchester United to join the Exiles. After a solid start, picking up four points from their opening two encounters, things have taken a turn for the worse. A draw against Notts County was a good point against last season’s beaten Play-Off Semi-Finalists, though the game was delayed and the ground evacuated after a fan was taken ill before kick-off. The Magpies required a penalty to draw level in the second period, following debutant Ged Garner’s header fifteen minutes earlier.
A quickfire double midway through the second half from Matt Smith and Liam Shephard did the business at Crawley Town, despite an injury-time consolation for the Red Devils. That didn’t set the scene for what was to follow, though. Defeat in the Carabao Cup 1st Round against Millwall was hardly a surprise against Championship opposition, but the margin of defeat was only a single goal. Cup runs had been their forte in recent years, but it wasn’t to be against the Lions at Rodney Parade. On their return to the league, a heartbreaking trip to Lincolnshire saw Grimsby Town score in the first and final minute of the encounter to prevail. Courtney Baker-Richardson deflected Keiran Green’s header into his own net in the opening minute, before Green scored the winner in stoppage time. Nik Tzanev kept the advantage at just one when he denied Jaze Kabia from the penalty spot, before Matt Baker equalised against the run of play. Three further defeats against Salford City, Milton Keynes Dons and Cambridge United ended the month on a sour note, with the losing run continuing against Bristol Rovers earlier in September. Baker-Richardson scored at the right end against Tranmere Rovers last Saturday to earn Newport a valuable point in Birkenhead.
After the Gills’ fast start to the campaign, Gareth Ainsworth was named the League Two Manager of the Month for August. But Gillingham have been rocked by rumours of his departure this week, as Reading’s Noel Hunt is under increasing pressure. Ainsworth has been sounded out as a potential replacement should the Royals make a change. But in his pre-match press conference before the Newport game this weekend, he had the following to say: “I’m very happy here, of course. It’s flattery and it’s not the first time. It means that we’re doing something right at Gillingham.” Into their fourth season in League Two, the side from Kent have only one top-half finish to their name in their previous three years at this level. Ainsworth was the man tasked with rectifying that to help push for promotion, having taken over at the end of March with their place in the fourth tier all but certain for this season. Nevertheless, he remained unbeaten in his nine games at the end of last season, defeating Port Vale on the final day of the campaign.
After a stalemate against Accrington Stanley in their first game of the season, Bradley Dack’s goal just before the hour mark was enough to see off beaten Play-Off Finalists Walsall. Penalties were required for the Saddlers victors in that showpiece game at Wembley to knock them out of the Carabao Cup, following a draw in normal time against AFC Wimbledon. The unbeaten run was only just maintained at Tranmere Rovers, as Omari Patrick rescued a point in second-half stoppage time. But on their return to the Priestfield Stadium, Ainsworth’s side produced their best performance of his reign by putting four past Chesterfield. Armani Little scored twice from the spot, while goals from Lenni Cirino on debut and substitute Marcus Wyllie completed the rout of the Spireites. Two single-goal victories against Crewe Alexandra and Oldham Athletic saw them move to the top of the League Two standings, with Sam Gale and Sam Vokes scoring the matchwinners. Another top showing against Fulham U21’s in the EFL Trophy was followed by more stoppage-time drama against Bromley. Trailing two nil against the Ravens, Josh Andrews halved the deficit before Max Clark levelled from the spot in the eighth minute of stoppage time. And they equalled a club record twenty games unbeaten in all competitions by beating Notts County last Saturday.
