Our Three Predictions For Grimsby Town vs Cambridge United:

  • First Prediction For Grimsby Town vs Cambridge United: Match Result – Grimsby Town – 11/10
  • Second Prediction For Grimsby Town vs Cambridge United: Over 2.5 Goals – 1/1
  • Third Prediction For Grimsby Town vs Cambridge United: Both Teams To Score – Yes – 4/5

First Prediction For Grimsby Town vs Cambridge United: Match Result – Grimsby Town – 11/10

Grimsby have won three from five in the league to sit on the cusp of the top three places after an impressive start to proceedings this term. David Artell’s side may have made headlines in the Carabao Cup, but their league form is making League Two teams sit up and take notice. Meanwhile, Cambridge have yet to get going following their relegation from League One last term, and were frustrated by an Oldham side they were two divisions above only a few months ago. With two wins but three losses in their past six, results are yet to indicate a promotion charge, though they are only three adrift of the Play-Off places. But with Grimsby impressive thus far, expect another three points for the Mariners.

Second Prediction For Grimsby Town vs Cambridge United: Over 2.5 Goals – 1/1

There is quite a contrast between the marksmen for both sides this season. Jaze Kabia has netted four times from an XG of 6.41, while James Brophy has significantly outperformed his 0.87 XG with three goals. The performances of these two players will be key in deciding who comes out on top in this fixture, and how many goals are scored at either end. Only once this season have the Mariners failed to find the back of the net, and while Cambridge were scoreless against Oldham last weekend, they have scored in seven of their nine games thus far. With that in mind, there should be a handful of goals this Saturday shared between the two sides.

Third Prediction For Grimsby Town vs Cambridge United: Both Teams To Score – Yes – 4/5

Since the EFL’s rebranding, only four of the twelve meetings have seen both these sides on the scoresheet in this fixture. Cambridge have enjoyed a great recent history in this fixture, winning five of the last seven games, and going unbeaten in the last seven league games. With the U’s expected to struggle this Saturday, expect the goals column to also go against recent history.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:

After an unexpected defeat against Bristol Rovers, Grimsby responded in the best possible way with a storming first half away at promotion favourites MK Dons. Kieran Green, Jaze Kabia and a stunning Charles Vernam strike gave them a barely believable three-nil advantage after half an hour. It appeared to get from bad to worse for the hosts, as Jon Mellish was dismissed in the first period. But surprisingly, that spurred MK on, as they pulled two goals back at either end of the half, but it wasn’t enough to force an unlikely point. In any ordinary season, that would be the Mariners’ best result of the season, but it is no regular campaign in Cleethorpes. Coupled with their strong start in the fourth tier, Grimsby recorded one of the biggest ever upsets in League Cup history by beating Manchester United. On that evening, the Cods threatened to throw away victory once again, as the Red Devils equalised in the second period following goals from Vernam and ex-United academy boy Tyrell Warren. But after the initial disappointment of not holding onto their advantage, they prevailed in a chaotic shootout to seal a famous win.

Back to the league, and it has been an impressive start to the campaign for David Artell’s side. That loss against the Gas is the only blot on their copybook thus far, in a game they probably deserved a share of the spoils. Goals were plentiful in their opening three encounters, easing past Crawley Town before fighting back from two goals down with six minutes remaining at Harrogate Town to secure an unlikely point. Progress in the Carabao Cup, setting up the tie against Manchester United, was achieved courtesy of a straightforward evening’s work against league rivals Shrewsbury Town. Further three points hauls followed against Newport County and Walsall, both by a single goal, before a stalemate against Accrington Stanley. The EFL Trophy hasn’t quite been their forte yet, losing to Bradford City thanks to a dramatic Andy Cook double on his return from injury. September continues with a trip to Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup, with more visiting supporters expected than Owls’ fans as they step up protests against owner Dejphon Chansiri. After that, a trip to the capital awaits against Barnet, before struggling Cheltenham Town travel to Cleethorpes at the end of the month.

You never really know what you are going to get with Cambridge United this season. Last Saturday’s defeat against Oldham Athletic epitomised that, handing the Latics their first three points of the season. Michael Mellon, son of manager Micky, scored the only goal midway through the first half, despite the U’s pressure as they tried and failed to find an equaliser. It had been a bright end to August, shocking Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup before easily dispatching Newport County. While the Addicks made wholesale alterations ahead of that cup meeting, the Championship side found themselves two down after half an hour, thanks to goals from James Brophy and Kylian Kouassi. While Ibrahim Fullah pulled one back from distance on the stroke of half-time, Zad Bradshaw made the game safe early in the second period. Starting the season with three points thanks to Louis Appéré’s close-range finish against Cheltenham Town, Neil Harris’s outfit were defeated on their first away trip of the season.

A topsy-turvy encounter against Swindon Town saw them get off to the perfect start thanks to ex-Robins man Brophy, pouncing on a gift from the home side’s keeper Connor Ripley. But Swindon quickly turned the game around after half an hour, further extending their advantage in the second period. Sullay Kaikai reduced the deficit, but to no avail in terms of sparking a comeback. Bristol Rovers defeated the U’s, avenging the Round One Carbao Cup defeat two weeks prior. Inbetween those two fixtures, Appéré scored his third in all competitions as they were held by Harrogate Town, before striking twice at the end of the first half to defeat Colchester United. With regards to the rest of the month,  the Sky Sports cameras are in town next Saturday for the visit of Fleetwood Town. Their opening Vertu Trophy encounter against Brighton & Hove Albion will have to be rearranged, as their League Cup tie against Fulham will instead take place. A trip to Tranmere Rovers ends the month for the twelfth-placed outfit.
