In a heavyweight League Two clash, the favourites for the title will face off despite questionable recent form. MK Dons have struggled uncharacteristically, boasting an exceptional squad for fourth-tier level – adding Championship quality to an already-stacked, Paul Warne outfit.
Chesterfield started brightly, tipped as one of the most free-flowing and attacking sides in the league. Paul Cook’s side will be looking to capitalise on their opponents’ poor form in a six-pointer that could have huge implications on end-of-season standings.
Our Three Predictions for Chesterfield vs Milton Keynes Dons

First Prediction for Chesterfield vs Milton Keynes Dons – Callum Paterson to score anytime 13/5
Paterson, who signed this summer from Sheffield Wednesday, has been Warne’s clear talismanic attacker in an underperforming front line. The 30-year-old has already netted three goals in the league as well as offering three assists. Having played 186 times over League One and Championship seasons with the Owls, Paterson is an exceptionally-skilled footballer for this level. MK Dons have failed to gel completely, with many high-profile names joining the project this campaign.
Goals against Barrow, Cheltenham Town and Newport County have seen Paterson bag in two away games; he could repeat this fortune in a crucial tie against the Spireites. Chesterfield have been leaking goals, particularly in the EFL Cup’s 7-1 defeat to Crewe Alexandra – despite heavy rotation. The 5-0 victory over Cheltenham proved Dons’ ability to dominate teams at this level, but need to embed a consistency in their attacking play.
Second Prediction for Chesterfield vs Milton Keynes Dons – Over 2.5 goals – 4/5
MK Dons have seen this bet land in just three matches so far this season, but a visit to Chesterfield may warrant an abandonment of defence solidity being the primary focus. The Spireites have been susceptible recently and could be exploited by a strong away lineup. With the attacking options at the disposal of both sides, the two managers and teams need to prove they are the superior threat in League Two this season.
Grimsby Town’s 3-2 victory against MK Dons saw an uncharacteristic performance for the latter. Therefore, this bet landed in Warne’s side’s latest fixture. In five of the last six games across all competitions for Chesterfield, Cook’s side have allowed this bet to land, with a combined total of 24 goals scored prior to a 1-0 defeat to Walsall in the league. The Spireites are unpredictable this season, despite being set such high standards for the campaign. This is a great opportunity for both to prove themselves, which will ultimately lead to a stalemate – given the attacking quality of both teams.
Third Prediction for Chesterfield vs Milton Keynes Dons – Draw No Bet – Milton Keynes Dons 13/10
Given the high likelihood of the two sides cancelling each other out in a draw, this bet covers a MK Dons win while also voiding the selection if a stalemate lands. Warne’s side look the stronger heading into this tie, with Chesterfield’s performances becoming increasingly unconvincing. The 7th-placed side are two points ahead of MK Dons but have a lesser goal difference and have arguably faced the easier teams out of the two.
A 7-1 performance has clearly had a knock-on effect for the Spireites, with an EFL Trophy disaster being followed under by a 1-0 defeat to Walsall. Dons also fell short 1-0 against the Saddlers too. However, they will be looking to dominate Chesterfield, with their ten goals in five previous matches outclassing just six from Cook’s team.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-to-Head
The Spireites opened their League Two campaign with an abundance of optimism. Two wins against Barrow and Cheltenham Town saw Cook’s side take all six points on offer. A stumble against bitter rivals, Mansfield Town, in the EFL Cup first round didn’t knock any confidence in the league. Chesterfield bounced back with a 3-1 win over Bristol Rovers, but got taught a lesson the following Tuesday in a 4-1 defeat to Gillingham. 2-1 and 2-2 results against Harrogate Town and Crawley Town were followed up by a 7-1 thrashing in the Vertu Trophy at the hands of Crewe. Cook’s team’s most recent match in the fourth tier saw Chesterfield narrowly lose to Walsall, 1-0.
As for MK Dons, Oldham Athletic held Warne’s side to a dull, 0-0 affair on the opening weekend, before they won 2-0 away at Barrow the following weekend. A knockout of the EFL Cup also occurred for Dons in the first round, with Bristol City handing a 2-0 lesson. The league favourites then flexed their attacking superiority in a 5-0 win over Cheltenham Town, but have only won against Newport since. In between these two results, a 1-1 draw with Crawley offered just one point. Similarly to Chesterfield, MK Dons have lost their last two matches – to Walsall also, and Grimsby.
MK Dons won both head-to-head games last season, with a 2-1 away victory closely following a December decimation in a 3-0 win over Chesterfield. An impressive victory back in 2011, saw Dons thrash the Spireites 6-2 in League One. Both are looking to head back to the third tier this season.
