Two fast starters in the fourth tier aim to return to winning ways after defeats last week, as Carabao Cup giant-killers Grimsby Town travel to Stadium MK to face Milton Keynes Dons.
Our Three Predictions For Milton Keynes Dons vs Grimsby Town:
- First Prediction For Milton Keynes Dons vs Grimsby Town: Match Result – Milton Keynes Dons – 1/1
- Second Prediction For Milton Keynes Dons vs Grimsby Town: Over 2.5 Goals – 4/5
- Third Prediction For Milton Keynes Dons vs Grimsby Town: Both Teams To Score – Yes – 31/50
First Prediction For Milton Keynes Dons vs Grimsby Town: Match Result – Milton Keynes Dons – 1/1
Both these fast starters are keen for a quick response to defeats last weekend. MK are above Town on goal difference, with three wins and two draws from their opening six fixtures of the season. Previous meetings have been frequent in recent times, with twelve encounters in nineteen years. After MK won four of the first five games, a ten year gap allowed Grimsby to lose only one of the seven meetings in as many years, winning three times. Nevertheless, MK were unbeaten against the Mariners last season, winning at Blundell Park, and expect them to replicate that feat this weekend.
Second Prediction For Milton Keynes Dons vs Grimsby Town: Over 2.5 Goals – 4/5
Only three sides on eleven goals have outscored the ten netted by both these sides in the opening six games. Grimsby added a further five in their two League Cup ties to date, showing their goalscoring capabilities in the opening month of the campaign. Curiously, no side have conceded fewer times than Paul Warne’s side in the early parts of the season, meaning their stats at both ends of the pitch are the best in the division. Grimsby have shipped double the number of goals as their fellow fourth-tier compatriots, so expect goals come Saturday afternoon.
Third Prediction For Milton Keynes Dons vs Grimsby Town: Both Teams To Score – Yes – 31/50
As goals have been plentiful during the opening month for both these promotion candidates, more of the same should be expected in a few days time. Although both lost by a single goal without reply last Saturday, that hasn’t typically been the case in the early exchanges of the season. But this weekend, MK will be missing Guatemalan international Nathaniel Méndez-Laing, while Géza Dávid Turi is absent for the visitors as he represents Faroe Islands during the international break. But, the formers absence shouldn’t damage the goalscoring threat of the home side too much.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Pre-season promotion favourites Milton Keynes Dons have had a solid, if not spectacular, start to the season. Following a goalless draw to begin the campaign against Oldham Athletic, late strikes from Alex Gilbey and Callum Paterson got the Buckinghamshire outfit up and running in Cumbria against Barrow. An early exit against strong Championship opposition in Bristol City was to be expected, though former single-season hero Scott Twine rubbed salt in the wounds by getting both assists at Ashton Gate. Nevertheless, MK bounced back in some style by thrashing Cheltenham Town five nil, impressing with five different goalscorers. Jack Sanders opening the scoring, while Gilbey and Paterson netted for the second weekend in succession to give them an unassailable advantage only 25 minutes into the contest. There was little let up in the second period, as Rushian Hepburn-Murphy and Aaron Nemane completed the rout against a sorry Robins side.
Former MK gaffer Scott Lindsey managed to take a point against his former employers, as Crawley Town held Warne’s outfit. Paterson and Méndez-Laing continued to prove their worth by turning the game around against Newport County, before Walsall put an end to their unbeaten start last weekend. With League One promotion expert Warne given the job in April, he has assembled a squad with players who wouldn’t look out of place in the third-tier. Aaron Collins (Bolton Wanderers), Paterson (Sheffield Wednesday) and Méndez-Laing (Derby County) were the standout attacking signings. There was some surprise when Kane Wilson left Warne’s former side Derby for the fourth-tier, while Gethin Jones was another to leave Lancashire. Will Collar (Stockport County), Tom Finch (Norwich City), Marvin Ekpiteta (Hibernian), Hepburn-Murphy (Crawley Town) and Jon Mellish (Wigan Athletic) round off a hugely successful window for the Buckinghamshire side.
Since Grimsby Town’s Carabao Cup heroics, they have hit a little bump in the road. Unbeaten across all competitions up to that point, the Cods lost against Bristol Rovers last Saturday. Despite striking the post early on and ramping up the pressure late in the contest, the Gas weren’t to be denied a first away victory since the opening month of 2025. Meanwhile, on Tuesday evening, David Artell’s outfit fought admirably with ten men, after Henry Brown was dismissed less than half an hour into the contest. But after leading when Danny Rose converted from twelve yards, their resistance was broken through Andy Cook’s headed double late in the second period. Prior to that, the Mariners had won five of their opening seven matches across all competitions, sitting fourth in the early standings. Netting three times in each of their first three matches, they eased past Crawley Town before fighting back from a two-goal deficit at Harrogate Town to draw a six-goal thriller. Having seen off Shrewsbury Town in the opening round of the League Cup, successive victories followed against Newport County and Walsall before a draw at Accrington Stanley.
But the landmark result from the opening month of the season was that incredible cup tie at Blundell Park against Manchester United. Charles Vernam and ex-Red Devils academy graduate Tyrell Warren had given the Mariners a dream half-time lead. While the visitors upped the tempo in the second period, it was only in the final fifteen minutes that they began the comeback. Substitute Bryan Mbeumo halved the deficit, before Harry Maguire levelled in the final minute of normal time, but the home side saw out a nervy period of stoppage time to take the game to penalties. And during a dramatic set of spot-kicks, Grimsby finally prevailed 12-11 after Matheus Cunha hit the bar. Only yesterday, Town were given a £20,000 fine after fielding an ineligible player during that tie. Clarke Odour was registered 119 seconds after the 12:00 deadline, coming on during normal time. Summer signing Christy Pym (Mansfield Town) impressed during the famous result, while Jaze Kabia has already netted three times in the league following his move from Truro City. Perhaps the biggest piece of business though was keeping hold of George McEachran, though Denver Hume departed for fourth tier rivals Fleetwood Town.
