Manchester United have opted not to appeal the FA’s decision to impose a fine on Grimsby Town after it emerged that they fielded an ineligible player during their stunning Carabao Cup penalty shootout victory last week.
The Mariners shocked the Premier League giants by racing into a two-goal first half lead during their clash at Blundell Park. United pulled out the big guns for the second half, drawing level late on when Harry Maguire nodded home from a corner.
The resulting penalty shootout was a marathon, with David Artell’s side eventually progressing with a 12-11 win after Bryan Mbeumo’s effort hit the crossbar. Ironically, Grimsby’s only miss came from new arrival Clarke Odour. It has since emerged that his arrival on loan from Bradford City was registered too late for him to feature.
The EFL announced this morning that the Lincolnshire-based side had been fined £20,000 – of which £10,000 will be suspended until the end of Season 2025/26 – for the breach, although Manchester United were given five days to appeal the decision.
Manchester United To Accept Defeat
There has been three prior instances of this in League Cup history, all of which have resulted in a fine. However, the FA Cup has seen teams removed for such instances, leading to speculation that Manchester United could appeal the decision in order to either replay the fixture or be reinstated into the competition at Grimsby’s expense.
According to reports, this is an option that the Red Devils are not considering and instead will ‘take defeat on the chin’. It is said that the 20-time English champions see an appeal as a lose-lose situation, where they would be widely mocked for taking such a stance.

United have already had to endure the embarrassment of losing to a fourth tier club in competitive competition for the first time in their history.

This is absolutely the right call from Manchester United. Nobody really expected them to appeal the decision, although there could have been an instance that would have seen them reinstated to the competition and reignite their chance of getting their hands on some silverware this season. However, such an achievement would have seen them openly mocked and would take away the scale of Grimsby’s achievement.
