Derby County vs Coventry City: Prediction, Lineups & Odds (16/08)

Derby County are needing an immediate turnaround in result following their late loss to Stoke City on Saturday. The opening weekend of the Championship season saw the Potters run out 3-1 victors, with fresh opposition this weekend, in Coventry City, reaching a stalemate with Hull City in a 0-0 draw.

Two progressing EFL Cup sides will now face off as the Rams beat West Bromwich Albion on penalties after a 96th-minute Joe Ward equaliser dragged the game beyond the 90. Coventry with a tidy 1-0 win over Luton Town, will look to keep their run of clean sheets going.

Our Three Predictions for Derby County vs Coventry City

First Prediction for Derby County vs Coventry City – Under 2.5 goals 29/50

Both Championship outfits boast resilient defences, with the exception of Derby’s uncharacteristic crumble on the opening day with Stoke. Despite conceding to an Aune HeggebĂž goal in the EFL Cup, Josh Vickers as a rotated ‘keeper provided County a safety net at the back. An equally-rotated back line held strong enough to draw level in the dying moments of the second half.

Under 2.5 goals has been a recent theme in head-to-head meetings between these two sides. On ten out of 12 occasions, dating back to August 2010, these two Championship outfits have failed to score over 2.5 goals in a meeting. With an even greater emphasis on defensive recruitment for both this summer, Coventry have brought in Kaine Kesler-Hayden as a versatile full-back option as well as Miguel Brau as a rotational asset. Carl Rushworth – on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion – will also provide a solid base to the defence.

Derby’s first full season under John Eustace will see a priority in defensive resilience shift towards just that. Dion Sanderson returns to work under the 45-year-old in his fourth transfer to a Eustace side. Danny Batth and Owen Beck have been added to their back line, with a returning David Ozoh loaned in to sit in front.

Second Prediction for Derby County vs Coventry City – Kayden Jackson 19/5

Having already contributed an assist in the recently-commenced league season, Blackett-Taylor rediscovered his scintillating pre-season form with a goal against Coventry this weekend. A goal and an assist againt RB Salzburg in just 59 minutes translated into the opening cross from the 27-year-old providing Carlton Morris with the leveler against Stoke. However, with a huge injury blow to the Englishman, Kayden Jackson could be utilised on the left-hand side or in his more natural position on the right.

The former Ipswich Town man could take this role as the in-form winger looks to be sidelined for six weeks with a hamstring injury. With a clear need to impress in a County shirt, Jackson also scored in the Salzburg friedndly, indicating some transformation under Eustace. At 19/5 and a need for goals elsewhere in the team, now that Blackett-Taylor has been sidelined, the winger could partner Morris as the main outlet for goals with a point to prove.

Third Prediction for Derby County vs Coventry City – Under 10.5 corners 19/20

In both EFL Cup fixtures for the two sides, as well as their respective Championship openers at the weekend, Derby and Coventry have seen this bet land every time. With exactly ten corners handed out on all occasions, this bet could be risky, but has a consistent backing in terms of statistics early on.

These two managers could cancel each other out on the day, with most of the play happening in the middle of the park. Chance creation may not be at an all-time high as both sides will enter the matchday with injuries and doubts. Derby do have a notoriety for blocks and important clearances, while Coventry’s marauding full-backs could apply immense pressure, but the trends already this season suggest that another sub-eleven corner count may happen.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-to-Head

In the past 12 meetings, there have been four wins for Derby, four draws and four victories for the away side. Coventry lost out in a league double to the Rams last season, with Eustace’s side prevailing as 2-0 victors in the March leg. Under Paul Warne, a 2-1 win sealed three points in November thanks to Jerry Yates’ opener and a Bobby Thomas own goal.

EFL Cup encounters saw both Championship sides progress to the second round. A 1-1 draw in normal time with West Brom meant that County needed a penalty shootout triumph to best the Baggies. Joe Ward equalised late on to deny West Brom a 1-0 win and ultimately prevailed. Coventry defeated League One side, Luton, to put their name in the next round’s hat. Ellis Simms capped off a decent outing with a 55th-minute goal.

In the second tier, Derby were left distraught after a late Stoke onslaught saw Divin Mubama – on debut – lead the Potters 2-1 in the 95th minute. Sorba Thomas – who recently transferred from Huddersfield Town – then scored Stoke’s third in the 9th minute of stoppage time to seal the three points. The Sky Blues drew 0-0 with Hull in on of Saturday’s opening games, despite dominating a large portion of the game against the Tigers.
