Bradford City kicked off their League One return with a near-perfect performance against Wycombe Wanderers on the opening weekend. One notable name on the scoresheet was 21-year-old Bobby Pointon.
Wonderful Against Wycombe
Wycombe conceded two early goals to some great play by the Bantams, with Antoni Sarcevic punishing the Chairboys with a headed finish in the sixth minute. The former Stockport County midfielder pounced on a Stephen Humphreys-created chance and opened the scoring. Pointon soon followed with an outside the box shot cutting into the bottom right corner.
The 21-year-old totalled four shots during a 76-minute stint and was subsequently rewarded yesterday with the announcement of a contract extension. However, one performance hasn’t suddenly made up Bradford’s mind; the Bantams’ homegrown talent has featured 83 times for the club already and has bagged 13 goals.
Two Contracts Are Better Than One
Until the summer of 2027 – with an option of a further year – Pointon will likely be a prominent figure in Bradford’s attacking setup. Following this important development for the young, versatile attacker’s career, Pointon had this to say on current feelings:
“I am buzzing to have signed an extension with the club. It was a no-brainer for me.
“I have supported this club my whole life, played here since I was young, and I love coming down every Saturday to play.”
Graham Alexander, Bradford City’s head coach, has recently extended his stay at Valley Parade too. The former Salford City boss gave a glowing review on Pointon’s development in a Bantams shirt thus far:
“Bobby has been a great asset for the team and shown constant progression, and we believe that can continue.
“He is talented and hungry, and that is a good combination to have. He deserves this new contract, and I am sure he will still be looking to improve again.”
Writer’s View
Bradford have achieved a very important extension here, with the 21-year-old able to continue an impressive development with his boyhood club. As a valuable asset, Pointon will add goals, strong build-up play and a high upside in transfer value.
This leaves options open for Alexander’s League One side, with Pointon likely to demand interest from at least second division sides in the coming years. Bradford will surely keep hold of the attacker for another year, judging by this impressive business model. Bradford have looked impressive already, judging from the opening weekend, and could stake a claim as ‘dark horses’ of the third division.
