Notts County Beat League One Clubs To Exciting Defender

Notts County have beaten a host of League One clubs to the signature of Manchester United defender Sonny Aljofree on a season long loan.

The 20-year-old spent the entirety of his boyhood career at the Red Devils and was a part of the 2022 FA Youth Cup winning squad alongside the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. After captaining the under-21 side, he was given his first taste of senior football last season when he spent the campaign on loan at League Two outfit Accrington Stanley.

Prior to his move the Lancashire based side, he committed his future to Old Trafford by signing a deal until 2027. His time at Stanley was hailed as a success and he made 27 appearances in all competitions, scoring three times.

This led to interest from League One, with Plymouth Argyle heavily linked to the centre-back last month. However, the Magpies have pulled off a major coup by convincing the player to head to Meadow Lane.

“We Faced Strong Competition”

County harbour promotion aspirations this season having lost to AFC Wimbledon in the play-off semi final in May. Aljofree is a quality addition to help them achieve that aim, a view shared by Director of Football Roberto Gagliardi. Speaking to the official club website, he said:

“Sonny has all the traits of a modern-day defender – balancing an aggressive playing style with the ability to distribute the ball from the back.

“He’s capable of playing anywhere across the defensive line, mainly being deployed in a back four for Manchester United but often on the right of a back three during his impressive loan at Accrington.

“Sonny’s maturity is reflected in the leadership roles he’s been given and the high esteem he’s held in by United. Combined with the fact he’s the son of former Plymouth defender, Hasney Aljofree, he has a very strong footballing pedigree.

“We faced strong competition from a number of League One clubs to sign him and we look forward to supporting his continued development.”

Writer’s View

This is an excellent deal for Notts County, who will feel they have added a top young defender who will be a regular fixture of the first team setup to their ranks. He is highly rated at Manchester United and there was speculation that he was set to be bedded into the first team squad under Erik ten Hag. Aljofree enjoyed an excellent spell at Accrington and it seemed natural that a move to League One would be the next logical step in his career. However, he clearly feels he will enjoy more time on the pitch at the Magpies and with a team that will be challenging at the top end of the table.
