Grimsby Town showed why they remain firmly in the hunt for a play-off spot with a commanding 3-1 victory over League Two leaders Walsall at The Poundland Bescot Stadium.
The Mariners have been on an excellent run as of late and the result extended their unbeaten run to seven matches. Meanwhile, Walsall, already on a disappointing streak, suffered their second successive home defeat.
The home side were quick out of the blocks and took the lead in the sixth minute through Ellis Harrison. The striker, making his return from illness, latched onto a well-executed counter-attack, finishing with calmness to put the ease the nerves within the stadium. It was a moment that seemed to inject some life into Walsall’s performance, but that optimism was short-lived.
Grimsby responded with confidence and were quick to punish their opponents for defensive mistakes. The equaliser came after a poorly defended set-piece, with Jayden Luker pouncing on a loose ball just outside the box and slotting it past Walsall goalkeeper Jack Rose.
The decisive blow came just before the break when the Saddlers woes at the back continued. Taylor Allen was adjudged to have fouled Tyrell Warren in the penalty area, and Grimsby’s Danny Rose made no mistake from the penalty spot, putting the visitors 2-1 up going into the half time interval.
Grimsby Deliver Potentially Decisive Blow To Walsall
In the second half, David Artell’s side controlled the pace of the game and wrapped up all three points in the 66th minute when Luker grabbed his second of the afternoon. The goal came from a well-placed cross, with the midfielder showing great composure to finish with precision.
Despite several changes from Walsall in an attempt to turn the game around, the hosts were unable to break down Grimsby’s solid defence, and the match ended with the visitors comfortably securing all three points.
