Newport County are in a competitive race to sign Cardiff City striker Michael Reindorf on loan before the mid-season transfer window closes on February 3rd, according to Football Insider.
The decision on Reindorf’s next move is expected shortly, with Cardiff carefully considering the 19-year-old’s development.
The forward has made four senior appearances for the Bluebirds this season, although just two of those have come in the Championship. Additionally, he has been in outstanding form for Cardiff’s Under-21 team in the Welsh League Cup, scoring seven goals in just four matches.
Reindorf joined the Welsh outfit on a free transfer from Norwich City last summer after rising through the youth ranks at the Norfolk club. His versatility as both a centre-forward and attacking midfielder makes him an attractive prospect for Newport, who currently battling survival in League Two where they sit 20th and just six points above the drop zone.
Newport Face Stiff Battle To Land Teenager
Newport are not alone in their pursuit of Reindorf. Notts County, currently fifth in League Two and pushing for promotion to League One, are also eager to strengthen their squad.
Scottish Premiership side Motherwell, managed by Stuart Kettlewell, are another contender. The club sit fifth in their division and would offer the youngster a different kind of challenge. Meanwhile, League One’s Bristol Rovers are also keen as they look to bolster their attacking options in order to avoid getting pulled further into the relegation battle.
Cardiff, under the management of Omer Riza since December, are focused on finding the best environment for Reindorf to develop further.
Writer’s View
From Newport County’s perspective, securing Reindorf on loan would be a significant boost. It would also be a major coup when taking into consideration the other clubs involved in the race.
The club’s struggles in front of goal have been a major factor in their precarious position in League Two. Reindorf’s proven ability at youth level, coupled with his exposure to senior football, could provide the attacking spark Newport need to climb away from the relegation zone. However, with competition from clubs across multiple tiers and countries, Newport will need to present a compelling case to convince Cardiff of their suitability as a destination for the talented teenager.
