Carlisle United Boss Expecting Big Things From New Signing

Carlisle United head coach Mike Williamson believes new signing Josh Williams may be the final piece of the jigsaw in their bid for League Two survival.

It’s been a dreadful campaign for the Cumbrians thus far. After suffering relegation from League One last season, they are staring down the barrel of back-to-back demotions. They travel to Fleetwood Town this afternoon seven points adrift of safety with 21 games left to play.

In a bid to maintain their EFL status, Carlisle have undergone a huge squad transformation this month. The opening of the transfer window at the beginning of the month has coincided with 10 new arrivals, the latest of which being Williams from Birmingham City.

The 22-year-old defender spent the first half of the season on loan at National League outfit Gateshead, making 10 appearances. He returned to St Andrew’s ahead of his transfer to Carlisle, where he penned a two-and-a-half-year deal.

“Cheat Code”

Williams is a pacey full-back, an attribute that Williamson believes will add something fresh to his squad. Speaking to The Carlisle News & Starhe said:

“If you speak to any manager, you can’t have enough of it (pace) because it is that cheat code,” Williamson said.

“When you’re finding it hard to break teams down – and especially (considering) this weekend how organised Fleetwood are, and how disciplined and how compact they are – there will be times where we are struggling, so to have that pace and power…I don’t think you can have enough of it.

“It’s a bit of a seamless transition because I think he will come in, he’s game ready, match-fit and he’s been playing [in a] very similar (style of play).”

Writer’s View

Carlisle are throwing everything but the kitchen sink at League Two survival this month. They have gambled by the number of new signings they have made which, on paper, look like very shrewd acquisitions. However, we all know that it can take time for new players to gel in their new surroundings. Unfortunately for the Cumbrians, time is something they don’t have. They need to start picking up points fast. Seven points is already a big gap and if they don’t start winning soon, that gap is likely to increase further.
