Our Three Predictions For Chesterfield vs Port Vale:

  • First Prediction For Chesterfield vs Port Vale: Match Result – Port Vale – 9/4
  • Second Prediction For Chesterfield vs Port Vale: Both Teams To Score – No – 93/100
  • Third Prediction For Chesterfield vs Port Vale: Half-Time Result – Draw – 53/50

First Prediction For Chesterfield vs Port Vale: Match Result – Port Vale – 9/4

On current form, these two sides are going in opposing directions. Vale have reignited their promotion hopes after their drop in form had coincided with Walsall’s incredible December. Chesterfield meanwhile are in their first campaign back in the EFL, but like many sides who win promotion from the National League, had started brightly this season and had been knocking on the doors of the Play-Offs. Unfortunately, those aspirations have taken a hit in recent weeks, but a top-half finish would represent a respectable season. Breaking into the top seven would require a stellar 2025, but unfortunately, any potential run they are going to embark on looks unlikely to start on Saturday afternoon with Vale in town.

Second Prediction For Chesterfield vs Port Vale: Both Teams To Score – No – 93/100

Only two sides have scored more than Chesterfield this campaign, but seven-goal winger James Berry has departed in the January window to Wycombe Wanderers. That leaves the Spireites a little lighter in forward areas, and they don’t tend to score masses at home with sixteen goals in twelve fixtures. Vale meanwhile have a similar record on their travel, also scoring sixteen and letting fifteen in at the other end. That’s one fewer than Chesterfield have conceded in Derbyshire this campaign, meaning a low-goal encounter can perhaps be expected. Vale don’t score masses either with that run of four games in five without conceding, but they should find the scoresheet at least once this afternoon.

Third Prediction For Chesterfield vs Port Vale: Half-Time Result – Draw – 53/50

Chesterfield rank third when looking at the League Two table at the midway point of games, only falling behind in seven of their 25 games by the interval. Coupled with Vale’s record of being level on fifteen occasions, more than any other side in the fourth tier, it is fair to expect a close-fought encounter. Only MK Dons have scored more first half goals than the Spireites 21, but they are facing the second best defensive record in that particular period of games, conceding only nine times. Given these statistics, it feels fair to assume the sides will cancel each other out on Saturday and go into half time level.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:

Chesterfield come into today’s encounter struggling for form. They are currently on a four-game winless run, which extends to five if you include the Rotherham EFL Trophy defeat. Prior to that, they had three league losses, which were ended by a draw against Grimsby six days ago. The Spireites took zero points from their three festive fixtures, losing at Fleetwood and Bradford before MK Dons took all three points on New Year’s Day.

Before this run, Paul Cook’s side had responded from their earlier loss against MK to win four games in a row in all competitions. All three league games came without conceding a goal, beating two relegation candidates in Tranmere and Carlisle before top three hopefuls AFC Wimbledon were also put to the sword. But that was the last time the Spireites tasted that winning feeling, and have dropped from fifth place, only two points off the automatic promotion places, to tenth. Having been in the Play-Off positions by three points at Christmas, Chesterfield are seven points adrift of the top seven at current.

Port Vale meanwhile have shrugged off a winless December to record an unbeaten start to the opening month of 2025. In fact, after defeating Morecambe through a late Ethan Chislett winner, which moved Vale five points clear at the top, they hadn’t recorded a league victory until the first weekend of this month. That saw them endure an eight-game run without victory, including two festive away reverses against Bradford and Grimsby.

But after a draw against Cheltenham on New Year’s Day, they went to promotion rivals Doncaster and recorded a huge victory, following that up last Saturday by beating Newport in a five-goal thriller. After dropping as low as fifth to start the year, the Valiants have climbed back into the automatic promotion places but have clubs breathing down their neck. Darren Moore’s side though were one of the pre-season favourites for an immediate return to League One, meaning they should be expected to shrug off any challengers in their aspirations of redemption.

The September meeting between these two sides was the first time they had met in over six years, with the result the same as the 2018 encounter as Chislett netted Vale’s only goal in a narrow win. The first meeting between the two came at the end of the 19th century, with 100 games over the 126 years that have followed. Vale lead the head-to-head by eight more games than their hosts this afternoon, winning 43% of the encounters.
