Wycombe To Win

Our Three Predictions For Wycombe Wanderers vs Portsmouth:

  • First Prediction For Wycombe Wanderers vs Portsmouth: Wycombe Wanderers to Win the Tie – 16/25
  • Second Prediction For Wycombe Wanderers vs Portsmouth: Wycombe Wanderers Over 2.5 Goals – 3/5
  • Third Prediction For Wycombe Wanderers vs Portsmouth: Both Teams To Score – Yes – 49/100

First Prediction For Wycombe Wanderers vs Portsmouth: Wycombe Wanderers to Win the Tie – 16/25

While Wycombe emerging victorious in this cup tie would be considered a cupset given the one divisional gap, both sides have had contrasting seasons on the pitch. In fact, only five places separate the two sides in the footballing pyramid. The Chariboys are flying in League One, second in the table but have hit a stumble in form, failing to win three of their last four. Portsmouth meanwhile keep blowing hot and cold, toothless in front of goal against Sunderland but hit four goals on New Years Day, the second time they have recorded such a tally in five outings. A cup run could be a distraction for either with league outcomes much more significant, but Wycombe should come out on top.

Second Prediction For Wycombe Wanderers vs Portsmouth: Wycombe Wanderers Over 2.5 Goals – 3/5

Given the Chairboys have only failed to find the back of the net twice in all competitions this season, it feels inevitable they will breach the Pompey defence at some point on Friday evening. Back in September, they were only narrowly defeated by Premier League Aston Villa, and Richard Kone ensured they got on the scoresheet, albeit in the 95th minute. No side in the top four tiers have scored more than Wycombe’s 50 league goals so far this season, with the closest League One outfit nine goals back. In 25 third tier outings they have averaged two goals a game, so a similar scoring return should be expected.

Third Prediction For Wycombe Wanderers vs Portsmouth: Both Teams To Score – Yes – 49/100

While focusing on the Chariboys so much and their goalscoring talent, it mustn’t be forgotten that there are two teams in this tie and one that are the division above. Pompey have scored 30 Championship goals this season while playing fewer games than all of their divisional rivals. It should be noted that figure is higher than many of the teams surrounding them, and is only one fewer than second place Burnley. In eight of their last ten games, their have been at least three goals a game, and the fact that Portsmouth have conceded 41 times should give more reason that both teams will find the back of the net.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:

Wycombe ended last season in excellent form, but even the most optimistic of Chairboys supporters couldn’t have foreseen the current campaign that has unfolded infront of them. League One’s top four have opened up a five-point gap to the chasing pack, with just two points separating Birmingham and Wrexham. Wycombe lead the Red Dragons on goal difference, but missed the chance to go top in their game in hand by losing against fourth place Huddersfield, who are closing in, on Tuesday evening.

On New Years Day, the Chairboys struck deep into stoppage time with Aaron Morley’s penalty. But just minutes after the final whistle, it was announced he was returning to parent club Bolton Wanderers. Caleb Taylor soon followed him out of Adams Park after being recalled by West Brom. In their final outing of 2024, two goals from Miles Leaburn ended their nineteen game undefeated streak in the third tier that had run from the third game of the campaign. The most recent defeat to the Terriers made it two losses in four games.

Portsmouth have seen their fortunes improve in recent weeks, moving out of the drop zone on goals scored. After producing a resurgent start to December, their progress was checked drastically in the East Midlands, thrashed 4-0 by Derby County. In true Championship fashion though, they responded with a hammering of their own against Coventry. That progress appeared to have been undone at Bristol City, losing by the same 3-0 scoreline that they had defeated the Robins by at Fratton Park at the start of the month.

This was after Watford had score a last-gasp winner to defeat John Mousinho’s side on Boxing Day in controversial fashion, but their next Bank Holiday encounter was much more memorable as they hit Swansea for four. That made it back-to-back four goal hauls on their own patch, but a defeat at Sunderland in their most recent game was their fourth consecutive loss on the road, showing contrasting fortunes away from the South Coast.

These two met twice last season as Pompey won the title, and they got the better of the Chairboys in both meetings. Their 3-1 victory at Adams Park was a rare defeat for Matt Bloomfield’s in-form outfit, but edged John Mousinho’s side ever-closer to winning the division. Wycombe are looking to reach the fourth round for the first time in four years, while 2008 winners Portsmouth last progressed to the Last 32 a year earlier.
