Tranmere Rovers Goalkeeper Makes Interesting Admission

Tranmere Rovers goalkeeper Luke McGee has admitted the mood around the club is ‘horrible’ after his team slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Morecambe on New Year’s Day.

The 29-year-old is in his second season at Prenton Park after joining the club in 2023 following his release from Forest Green Rovers. He has played every minute of Rovers’ campaign thus far, which has largely been spent in the bottom half of League Two.

With two wins in their last 10 outings, those in and around the relegation places have been allowed to move closer to Nigel Adkins’ team. Morecambe, who have been in the bottom two for the majority of the season, piled the pressure on the manager when they secured the three points at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium on Wednesday.

This has seen the Shrimps move to within two points of the Wirral-based club and with Carlisle United up next, another loss could prove disastrous.

McGee Makes Honest Admission

The former Portsmouth shot stopper knows that Tranmere are in a dogfight for survival. Speaking to Wirral Globehe admitted that the mood around the club is horrible:

“You’d have to be naïve and stupid not to say we’re in a relegation battle because we are.

“The next game is Carlisle but no matter who we are playing it’s a must-win game – we can’t let teams above us become adrift and we can’t let teams below us overtake us – it’s as simple as that.

“The mood is horrible. We’re not winning games and we know it’s a results business.”

Continuing, McGee accepted the club’s dire position but stated it isn’t through a lack of trying:

“I came here to the club because I know its history and stature and with the squad of players we’ve got we should be nowhere near where we are but the fact if the matter is we are and we need to change that.

“We need all the help we can get and we need everyone behind us but we’re working hard and we’re trying and I know things aren’t going well but it’s not from a lack of trying. We’re doing our best but it needs to change.”

Writer’s View

There seems to be an air of inevitability around Tranmere at the moment that change is needed. It seems only a matter of time until the club decide to make a managerial change, something Rovers fans have become increasingly vocal about. The last thing Adkins needs is one of his senior players admitting the mood at Prenton Park is horrible. Anything less than three points against bottom of the table Carlisle could signal the end of his tenure.
