Carlisle United Set For Major Statement Signing

Carlisle United are set to complete a huge transfer coup with the acquisition of Elliot Embleton from League One outfit Blackpool, according to Football League World.

It’s been a hugely disappointing year for the Cumbrians. They suffered relegation from League One in May and have followed that with a second successive fight for survival.

Mike Williamson’s team will begin 2025 in 23rd position. They will make the trip to Crewe later today with a renewed optimism though after recording their first win since early November on Sunday, when they beat fellow strugglers Accrington Stanley 2-1 at Brunton Park.

Williamson Targeting Big Transfer Window

Earlier this week, Williamson stated that the January transfer window could prove make or break for Carlisle, telling The Carlisle News & Star:

“I think it could not be any more important, I think the position we are in is a very difficult one so it is very important.”

They have already made one signing, bringing in midfielder Will Patching from Derry City.

Second Signing Will Make Huge Statement

According to reports, Carlisle are set to complete the signing of Elliot Embleton from Blackpool on a three-and-a-half year deal. The 25-year-old only joined the Tangerines in the summer from Championship outfit Sunderland but has found playing time limited in recent weeks.

The former Derby County loanee has achieved success at a higher level, helping Sunderland win the League One play-offs, scoring in the final win over Wycombe Wanderers. However, he has suffered his fair share of injury problems in the past couple of years.

Despite his absence from Blackpool’s squad over the past few weeks, Embleton has still made 23 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring once and contributing three assists.

Writer’s View

Embleton’s career has stalled over the past couple of years but there is no doubt that he has the ability to be one of the standout players in League Two. To sign a player of such pedigree is a huge boost for Carlisle. To offer such a long-term contract indicates they are clear in their ambition and that dropping into the National League is almost unthinkable. Embleton will bolster Mike Williamson’s options, where he is capable of playing in an array of positions across the midfield.
