Wrexham Boss Issues Injury Update

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has confirmed that midfielder James Jones has suffered a reoccurrence of a foot injury in the 1-0 EFL Trophy win over Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday night.

The 28-year-old joined the Red Dragons in 2021 from Lincoln City as the Welsh outfit looked to navigate a way out of the National League. He immediately became a staple of Wrexham’s midfield which narrowly missed out on promotion in his first season.

Jones then helped his team to back-to-back successes, rising from the National League to League One in the space of two years. However, he began to suffer injury problems during the second half of last season, leading to him losing his place in the team.

The former Crewe man has struggled for minutes this season, featuring just twice in the league. He has once again spent time on the treatment table but was handed a rare start against his former club on Tuesday.

Parkinson Confirms Jones Injury

Jones lasted just 32 minutes at the STōK Cae Ras before he was replaced by Andy Cannon. Speaking to the The Leader after the game, Parkinson confirmed that the midfielder had suffered a reoccurrence of a foot injury:

“I feel for James. He’s had a problem with his foot for a while now.

“I’d say probably around the FA Cup game at Harrogate when he came out of training and we’ve rested him, he’s had an injection.

“He’s been back in training a week with no problem but he felt it go against Crewe and I don’t know the extent of it but I feel for James because he was ready to make a contribution and we have just got to keep our fingers crossed it’s not too serious.”

This is a huge setback for Jones, who is out of contract in the summer. With limited minutes under his belt this season, the game against Crewe offered the 28-year-old a rare chance to show his manager that he is capable of playing a key role in a Wrexham squad pushing for a third successive promotion. Hopefully this is just a minor problem and he can recover sufficiently to feature during the second half of the campaign.
