Our Three Predictions For Huddersfield Town vs Wigan Athletic

  • First Prediction: Under 2.5 goals to be scored – 33/50
  • Second Prediction: Match to end in a draw – 5/2
  • Third Prediction: Both sides to score – 89/100

First Prediction For Huddersfield Town vs Wigan Athletic: Under 2.5 goals to be scored – 33/50

Both sides have some of the best defensive records in League One this season. Only one side, Wrexham, has conceded less than the Latics this season. The Terriers aren’t far from Wigan’s record and have conceded two more goals, ranking them joint-fifth defensively in the third tier. To further show how impressive both sides have been, in all competitions, Maloney’s side has kept a commendable 11 clean sheets, Michael Duff’s side keeping nine. With both side’s strong records at the back, this match probably won’t be a goal-fest.

Second Prediction For Huddersfield Town vs Wigan Athletic: Match to end in a draw – 5/2

Despite Huddersfield being sat in the play-off spots and 10 places above Wigan, both sides are in good form going into this match. Duff’s side has picked up the pace in recent weeks, and are unbeaten in four since losing to National League outfit Tamworth. In this run of four unbeaten, the last three matches in all competitions have been wins. Before the shock FA Cup loss, the Terriers went five unbeaten, meaning their only defeat in almost two months has come at the hands of a side two leagues below. Maloney’s side have experienced the same fate, only losing to league leaders Wycombe Wanderers in their last six matches in all competitions. For two sides who are in good form, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them take a point each from the John Smith Stadium. Furthermore, Wigan have a very respectable away record and have picked up nine points, two wins and three draws on the road in League One. They also beat Cambridge United in the FA Cup away from home in extra time on the weekend.

Third Prediction For Huddersfield Town vs Wigan Athletic: Both sides to score – 89/100

Although the defensive records mentioned for both teams may be challenging to overcome, both sides have proved recently that they can find the back of the net. Duff’s side have scored 25 goals in 16 games so far, and have scored eight goals in their last three games alone. They have failed to score in just four games in all competitions, and have so far seen 11 different goalscorers in the league alone. Wigan have a significantly worse record in front of goal, however, young Thelo Aasgaard has scored three in his last three, is the Latics’ top-scorer and looks to be inform for this clash.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head

As previously mentioned, both sides are in very good form going into this one. Wigan have lost just one in their last five, and the Terriers record is the same. There’s no doubt how crucial three points would be for either side, Huddersfield could further cement themselves as promotion and play-off contenders, whilst Wigan could move as high as 11th depending on other results. Three teams can overtake Duff’s side for that last playoff spot if they manage to win their games, even if his side picks up one point.

The Terriers had a rest on Saturday, as they were knocked out in the FA Cup first round, whilst Wigan won away at Cambridge United, and find themselves in the hat for the third round.

In recent years, these sides have met in the Championship, however, they have yet to meet in the third tier. Since 2013, they have met each other a total of 11 times. Out of these 11 times, Wigan have won the majority of them, taking the three points six times. Out of the other five occasions where these sides have met, two have ended in draws, the remaining three Huddersfield wins.
