From the big budget of Birmingham City to the surprising struggle promotion contenders Rotherham United have had at the start of the season, it’s fair to say League One has been very entertaining so far.
Three midweek fixtures in the division saw Steve Bruce’s Blackpool secure a huge win away at Huddersfield Town, whilst the points were shared between Leyton Orient and Peterborough United and in the game between Wigan Athletic and Stevenage.
In this piece we will highlight three matches we think you should be keeping your eyes peeled for as the final weekend of September fixtures draws ever closer. Let us know in the comments your thoughts on our picks and any other feel free to voice any other opinions you have on any of this weekend’s League One fixtures.
1. O’s Vs Wrexham
Leyton Orient have been in superb form since the international break, picking up seven points from a possible nine, including a shock thrashing at Stockport County at the weekend. Richie Wellens’ side also outperformed promotion favourites Peterborough United on Tuesday, and were unlucky to only come out of that match with a point.
Top-of-the-table Wrexham are in East London on Saturday, looking to improve on their flying start in their first season back in the division, with their only defeat coming against arguably the best side in the league in Birmingham City. This will be the first meeting since that memorable 1-0 victory for The O’s in The National League in 2019, which helped Orient secure the title
. If the atmosphere and spectacle is anything like it was that day, then it will certainly be a great matchup this weekend.
2. Fascinating Oakwell Tie
Barnsley really have recovered well since that opening-day defeat at home to newly promoted Mansfield Town, only losing one game since. Their fine winning form has seen them rise to third in the league, as The Tykes hope that this will finally be the year that they are promoted back to The Sky Bet Championship. Midfielder Adam Phillips has been in fine form for Darrell Clarke’s side, scoring four goals so far this season.
Travelling to Oakwell on Saturday evening live on Sky Sports will be Stockport County, a side who were in sparkling form before last weekend’s shock defeat to Leyton Orient, and will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season. Victory for the visitors would seem them leapfrog their hosts, as the table starts to take shape heading into October.
Two sides with great quality in both squads, expect a really high standard of football when the two sides meet.
3. Bruce vs Burton
The Steve Bruce era at Bloomfield Road definitely has brought back that feel-good factor to Blackpool supporters with three wins from three league matches, including impressive away wins at Charlton Athletic and most recently against a very strong Huddersfield Town in midweek. Victory over Burton Albion this weekend could see them enter the playoff places as The Tangerines look to join the promotion race under the leadership of the former Newcastle United manager.
In contrast, The Brewers have visibly struggled in the league so far – winless in all 6 matches. Only Cambridge United are winless in the third tier, and Mark Robinson’s side will need to be at their very best if they are to pick up a result on Saturday. The positive for Burton is that they have been competitive in most matches, drawing four and only losing last week to Barnsley in the last minute, so they will be hoping they can put in a similar performance but try to get some points on the board this time around.
