Wrexham Deadpool Owner Wants Rio To Join Their Hollywood Line Up

Wrexham are riding high after back-to-back promotions, and you really wouldn’t bet against a third this season. The “Hollywood” script is still being written, and now could include more stars.

Well, at least if you took the joke that former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand recently shared with the owners.

When Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over the Welsh side in November 2020, it was seen as a gimmick that would run its course and fade away. Since then, on the pitch they have taken care of business, and the business itself is taking care of itself. Or at least in a reasonably manageable style, time will tell if they can continue in the same way.

However knowing that League One and the Championship beyond that could prove harder to tackle, Reynolds joked that he could recruit Ferdinand to help their cause.

During the pundit’s recent podcast, and reported by Wales Online, the actor asked if the once West Ham United star would be interested in teaming up with the Wrexham outfit, to which Ferdinand replied. “I have huge respect for what you’ve done.”

Not one to leave something like that alone, Reynolds pushed further. “How much respect? Are you willing to relocate… or?” The light banter continued with the defender now feeding back. “In what capacity are you looking for me to be recruited? I can’t play no [sic] more – but I’d help you off the pitch.”

A stalemate then, until Reynolds pushed once more. “Yeah? I could use some of that too.” Trying to have the last word on the matter, and not be outdone by the smart-mouthed Deadpool actor, Rio shot back. “You’re doing alright – don’t worry about that.”

Turning to more serious thoughts the owner did say that the move to own Wrexham was one of his best decisions and was asked about his most memorable moments since taking over. “Well, they never stop. Wrexham is sort of, for some reason everything comes down to the wire over there – everything happens in the last two seconds of the match. I’ve never seen jubilation and explosive emotion like I have in Wrexham, but then so much more of it has to do with the city and the town in and of itself.

“And as much as the fact as everybody on Earth has a story to tell and there’s something so heartbreaking and beautiful about the story that’s coming out of Wrexham and this idea of when we got there it was ‘Why me? Why us? ‘ and ‘Nothing good happens to us’.”

The Welsh side has another preseason full of exciting fixtures including Chelsea, and Vancouver Whitecaps, as well as a match against Premier League Bournemouth. Then the real work starts with their first League One game of the season against Wycombe Wanderers.

Writer’s View

The good times keep coming for Wrexham, and as long as they keep winning the smiles of the owners – and shredded nerves – will remain. Of course, the tongue-in-cheek banter might be just that, but as the rise up the leagues continues, they may be looking at more high-profile names to be on the training ground and in the dugout. The seeds of such appointments are often made through chance meetings, so watch this space…
