Sam Sherring has departed Northampton Town after the club agreed a deal with a League Two side.
The 24-year-old joined Jon Brady’s side in July 2022 and has made 77 appearances for the club since arriving from AFC Bournemouth. He was also part of the side that sealed promotion from League Two in 2023 and continued his fine form as the Cobblers recorded a 16th-placed finish in the third tier.
MK Dons have announced that Sherring has switched to the Buckinghamshire side following the expiration of his contract at Sixfields, which was initially reported by Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke.
Moving back down a division, the centre-back becomes the fifth name to join Mike Williamson’s team this summer, the most recent being Tommy Leigh for an undisclosed fee from Accrington Stanley. Dons fell short in the League Two playoffs against eventual winners Crawley Town in the semi-final.
He has previously played for Stanley and Cambridge United, as well as a loan spell at Torquay United where he played with fellow new recruit Conor Lemonheigh-Evans from Stockport County.
Town have recently secured the future of another centre-back after extending the contract of Jordan Willis for a further two years after joining as a free agent in October of last year.
Speaking to the club upon arriving in Milton Keynes, he said: “The plan and the vision for the club, as well as the facilities and everything here, made it a no-brainer decision for me. I’m really happy to be here!
“The style of play is something that’s massive for me! I think it’s really attractive and something that’ll suit me, hopefully, we can be successful with it.”
The 40-year-old Dons boss Williamson added: “Sam fits the profile of the kind of player we want to bring into the club down to the ground. He’s young and hungry to succeed but already has meaningful EFL experience and has won promotion from this division before. We’re really pleased to have him and look forward to seeing what he adds to our defence.”

Sam Sherring is another great signing for MK Dons this off-season. Defending was a weaker point of their side, conceding the joint most of any top seven side, equal with Doncaster Rovers who were languid for much of the season. Sherring should be playing at a League One level and that speaks volumes to the confidence in what Mike Williamson’s ambitions are.
Dons are surely favourites for the title this season and with the strengthening they have completed so far with this signing and Tommy Leigh, it will be difficult for any side to stop them. Max Dean, Alex Gilbey and Leigh will probably be the strongest attack in the division, with Joe Tomlinson and Stephen Wearne giving them immense depth.
