Lincoln City Set To Target Promotion Rivals To Bolster Squad

Lincoln City have set their sights on Blackpool defender Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel this summer, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Having been 15 points off the League One play-off places at the end of January, Michael Skubala has inspired a turnaround of epic proportions. Good Friday’s 1-0 win over Leyton Orient saw the Imps extend their unbeaten run to 14 games and with others dropping points around them, saw them move into the top six.

That victory arguably ended Orient’s hopes of securing a play-off spot, although there is still a four-way tussle. Oxford United sit level on points with Lincoln in seventh, whilst Stevenage are a further point back in eighth. Blackpool‘s defeat against Derby County last time out means they have ground to make up.

Interestingly, it is the Tangerines that now find themselves the subject of interest from one of their promotion rivals. According to Nixon, Lincoln are keen on right-back Lawrence-Gabriel and are weighing up a summer swoop.

The 25-year-old initially joined Blackpool on a season-long loan in 2020 from Nottingham Forest, helping the club achieve promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs. He then signed on a permanent basis in 2021, penning a four-year deal that is set to keep him at Bloomfield Road until 2025.

He has become a prominent part of Neil Critchley’s side during the second half of this season after recovering from a serious knee injury that had ruled him out of first team action until November. He has since made 23 appearances in all competitions as Blackpool target an immediate return to the Championship.

The Lancashire side will look to keep the pressure on when they host Wycombe Wanderers this afternoon, whereas Lincoln travel to bottom side Carlisle United. The Cumbrians will be full of confidence however, after securing a shock 3-1 win over Peterborough United on Friday.

This is an interesting link, although there is probably a degree of truth to it. Lincoln could find themselves playing in the Championship next season, which is likely to end these rumours. However, they could be in the market for a new right-back should they remain in League One.

The position is currently occupied by Lasse Sorensen, who is out of contract at the end of the season. He is set to be a wanted man and it is no secret that he is a player capable of playing in the second tier. Promotion for the Imps could see him extend his stay at Sincil Bank. Failure to do so though may see plenty of potential suitors appear for the Dane.
