Gillingham Secure Permanent Signing Of Young Championship Striker

Gillingham has swopped to complete the permanent signing of Josh Andrews from Championship side Birmingham City.

Stephen Clemence gained the services of the 22-year-old, who has spent the first half of this season on loan at Accrington Stanley.

The striker has signed for an undisclosed fee.

Having come through the Academy at St. Andrews, he has spent most of his professional career on loan. In the 2021/22 season, he was at Rochdale and made an impression on the current Gills assistant coach Robbie Stockdale who was in charge of Dale at the time.

Doncaster Rovers then took Andrews on loan before his time at Stanley this campaign.

The Gillingham Official website reported the signing and was able to get the young strikers’ thoughts on his fresh start.

“I am delighted, I am looking forward to getting started. You want to join a club with a plan, this club clearly has that and I’m on board.

“I can’t wait. I will give 100% every time I pull on the shirt; the fans can expect a target man that is going to take care of the ball, always try and be available for the team to get them up the pitch and when crosses are delivered into the box I will be on the end of them.”

Gillingham sits just outside the League Two playoff places and has made some good young signings that give Clemence some healthy attacking options going into the final stages of the season. Josh Andrews has been shipped around the lower leagues and has always managed to chip in with goals, despite this.

Now though with a permanent new home, he has a chance to impress and if he can pick up where he left off with his five goals in 20 games for Accrington, then he could well elevate the Kent side into the playoffs.
