Oxford United Midfielder Gathering Interest From League Two Club

Oxford United’s Alex Rodriguez Gorrin is reportedly in discussions with League Two strugglers Forest Green Rovers over a potential move.

The Nailsworth club are currently rooted at the bottom of the Football League and are looking to strengthen to increase their survival chances. Rovers as it stands are six points away from safety, playing fellow relegation battlers Salford City today.

Gorrin signed a new short-term contract in October, with his deal running out at the end of January. According to Football Insider, Troy Deeney’s side have been in talks with the Spaniard over joining the club at the end of the contract.

Oxford United signed the 30-year-old in 2019 from Scottish Premiership side Motherwell on a free transfer. The Tenerife native has made 118 appearances for The U’s, scoring three goals.

However, Gorrin has struggled in recent times at the Kassam Stadium, suffering an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury in December 2022, keeping him out for the rest of that season as well as pre-season for this campaign.

Despite his return to fitness over previous months, Des Buckingham has rarely utilised the number 25, only making four appearances this season, with two in the league against Wigan Athletic and Charlton Athletic.

With his contract coming to an end, Gorrin seems likely to move to Forest Green Rovers on a free deal, and would presumably become a first-choice option in Gloucestershire.

Alex Rodriguez Gorrin’s time at Oxford seems to be coming to an end. It is a shame for him, as someone who was a constant in his first few seasons at the Kassam Stadium and has been a solid rotation option up until his ACL injury. Whilst not being a figure that will be seen as an icon by fans, he has been a loyal and reliable servant to the club, and upon his departure will be wished well by the U’s faithful.

Forest Green will get a quality player should the rumours of this deal come true. Gorrin may have been sidelined for a significant amount of time but still has plenty to offer in football, and perhaps a move down a division can rebuild his confidence and match sharpness. Troy Deeney does need the quality to keep his side in the Football League, and the Spaniard could be one piece of the puzzle to do that.
