Stevenage Dealt Blow In Pursuit Of January Target After Manager’s Comments

With the January transfer window quickly approaching, Stevenage have reportedly been on the lookout for a new attacker to add depth and quality to the squad.

Journalist Alan Nixon revealed on his exclusive Patreon that Steve Evans’ side are set to battle it out with relegation-strugglers Carlisle United over the signing of Burton Albion’s Cole Stockton.

Stockton has struggled for game-time this season at the Pirelli Stadium, making five appearances in League One this term, with one coming at the weekend during a 4-0 defeat away at Peterborough United.

The 29-year-old found the net for the first time in the current campaign, only it was at the opposite end of the pitch. His own goal was the third that the Brewers had conceded during the dismal afternoon.

Albion boss Dino Maamria came out fighting in his pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s home tie against Portsmouth. The gaffer commented on rumours which circulated on social media that him and Stockton had fallen out [quotes via The News, Portsmouth]:

“I’ve been reading people saying ‘what happened to Dino and Cole Stockton after the game?’ and I want to put it to one side. Whoever is spreading rumours like that, they’re nothing to do with the club and they’re simply not true.

“Cole Stockton and I are very close. Actually, me and the players are very close.

“As a manager, I would say this is the group I’ve been closest to. We are a very tight group together, our togetherness is what we are and anyone trying to affect that is not one of us. I saw someone asking the question and I thought: ‘well, I need to address this, because I don’t want things like that to get bigger than what they are’.”

Writer’s View

Burton Albion have been on a poor run of form recently, having done so well to climb out of the relegation zone in the first-place. However, it’s refreshing to see the manager back his players and deny any rumours of a drift in the camp.

Nevertheless, Maamria didn’t dispute the report that Stockton may still leave in January if Carlisle United or Stevenage come in for him, although his comments suggest that the player is happy at the Pirelli.
