Derby County look set to miss out on key transfer target Billy Sharp with the ex Sheffield United striker being lined up for a move to the MLS with LA Galaxy, according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon.
The 37-year-old attacker had been linked with a whole host of clubs after being released from his hometown Blades, namely League One Derby County but also the likes of Rotherham United in the Championship.
Nobody could have called this interest from further afield however, with MLS giants LA Galaxy allegedly now in for the services of the experienced forward.
Derby County’s Pursuit For A Striker
Derby have been in desperate pursuit for a new striker at the club ever since the highly publicised exit of David McGoldrick from Pride Park, the EFL veteran rejoining Notts County after starring in a Rams shirt last season – scoring 25 times in the process.
Paul Warne has bolstered the attacking options somewhat with the purchases of Conor Washington and Martyn Waghorn, both experienced strikers in their own right.
Yet, Billy Sharp’s goalscoring expertise would have been a crucial addition – Sharp scoring 104 goals at League One level throughout his celebrated career, the Sheffield born attacker netting 30 times from 46 games played last time he featured in the third tier.
America could well be his next calling however, Los Angeles his rumoured next destination to see his out playing days.
Wantaway Stars At The Rams
This news won’t be received in the best spirits by Derby County fans, with numerous stars at the club plotting for moves away to add insult to injury.
High profile players within the Rams set-up could well have had their heads turned by the prospect of big moves away from Pride Park, the likes of Max Bird rumoured to be pushing for a transfer out of Derby.
Derby fans will just hope they can keep hold of their prized assets to calm the turbulent mood at Pride Park, Paul Warne’s players booed off the pitch at Pride Park after their dismal 2-0 defeat to fellow League One side Blackpool mid-week.
Writer’s View
Billy Sharp would have been an excellent signing at Derby County, adding another experienced face into the fold who could take over the role David McGoldrick occupied in the team – a veteran striker who still has a knack for goal, with the ability to shine in the third tier despite age concerns.
LA Galaxy’s rumoured interest has come as a surprise, but you cannot blame Sharp for wanting to see his career out in the MLS sunshine after scoring so many goals and achieving so much in the EFL.
Derby will now turn their attention to other potential targets, whilst Sharp looks set to finally land himself a club after being released by Sheffield United.
