Wigan Athletic Hit With Huge Double Blow

With the beginning of the League One season right around the corner, Wigan Athletic have suffered two substantial blows as Jack Whatmough and Jamie McGrath have both left the club.

In an official statement released by the Latics, the club confirmed that both players decided to terminate their contracts despite being spearheaded by a new ownership.

The reason for both players’ contract terminations was due to contractual breaches under the previous ownership, proving that Wigan continue to endure the fallout of the former hierarchy’s actions.

Whatmough’s departure may be more surprising for the fanbase as the defender made 86 appearances in all competitions for the former Premier League outfit after his arrival from Portsmouth two years ago.

Statement from the club

Wigan Athletic also revealed their failed efforts to keep both Whatmough and McGrath at the club and stated that the duo had worked off ‘advice and guidance’ from the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) [via club media]:

“Following advice and guidance from the PFA, Jack Whatmough and Jamie McGrath made the decision to terminate their contracts due to repeated contractual breaches under the previous ownership.

“The Club made repeated efforts to retain both players, but ultimately a decision has been made to focus on the future under the new ownership in this exciting new era for Wigan Athletic.”

Wigan rounded off the statement by thanking both players for their service in a blue shirt and wishing the pair well for the future in their careers.

This is a massive blow for Shaun Maloney and the club itself with the League One campaign kicking off in less than two weeks.

The Latics are already working under the constraints of an eight-point deduction carrying over from last season’s dismal relegation campaign and have now lost two players with immense quality, including a full Republic of Ireland international.
