Burton Albion have received a huge boost ahead of the new League One season after tying down defender Tom Hamer to a new two-year deal, according to the official club website.
There had been plenty of speculation in recent weeks that the 23-year-old was set to leave the Pirelli Stadium after seeing his existing contract come to an end. The club announced in May that the former Oldham Athletic man had been offered fresh terms as they hoped to extend his time in the East Midlands.
Hamer had been linked with a move to the Scottish Premiership with Aberdeen, whereas a host of English clubs were also reportedly interested in securing his signature.
Who is Tom Hamer?
The versatile defender rose through the ranks at Oldham before making his senior debut in 2018. He became an ever-present at Boundary Park following their relegation to League Two, making 105 appearances in all competitions before joining Burton in the January transfer window in 2021.
He fast became a fan favourite for The Brewers and he soon became the subject of interest from fellow EFL clubs, most notably Wycombe Wanderers and Barnsley throughout 2022.
Upon the expiration of his contract at the end of last season, Hamer was said to be considering his options elsewhere before finally putting pen-to-paper earlier today.
What Has Been Said?
This is a situation that has dragged on well into pre-season and manager Dino Maamria was delighted to finally reach a conclusion, saying;
“We are thrilled that it’s finally over the line. I want to thank the chairman for backing me to make the deal happen. Tom had interest elsewhere but after a lot of conversations he decided that this is the best place to spend the next two years of his career.
“We know what he’s about and Tom knows what we’re about. He knows the club and the dressing room well. He’s an integral part of what we’re trying to do and we’re thrilled to have him back.”

Hamer echoed the manager’s thoughts, claiming his vision had a huge sway on his decision;
“I’m glad that everything’s been sorted. I’ve been training for a couple of weeks with the boys, and I think seeing the players that Dino’s bringing in, the quality that’s brought in, I think this next season is going to be a special one. The confidence and trust he (Dino) shows within me was obviously a big reason for me re-signing.
“It’s such a community club where they do so much all the time within the community, and I think you can see how well run the club is. I’ve enjoyed my two and a half years and I’m looking forward to more.”
Writer’s View
The news that Hamer has committed to another two years at Burton Albion will come as a huge boost for the club.
After a topsy-turvy season, which saw the club spend much of the campaign flirting with relegation before pulling away from the drop zone late on, it is understandable that his head was turned by other clubs. This may have upset a few fans, but the Brewers need quality to compete in a tough division this season and Hamer certainly fits that bill.
