Wycombe Wanderers have confirmed their second signing of the summer transfer window with Manchester City youngster Kian Breckin signing on loan until the end of the season, over on the official Chairboys club website.
Breckin comes highly thought of from the Premier League champions, with Matt Bloomfield’s men winning the race for his signature amidst significant interest from other EFL suitors.
Wycombe will hope they can get more signings in the door alongside this loan deal for Breckin, with experienced centre-back Richard Keogh the only other signing confirmed at Adams Park at the time of writing.
Who Is Kian Breckin?
Joining Manchester City at 15 years of age, Breckin has excelled within the youth set-up at the illustrious club ever since.
The 19-year-old has predominantly played as an attacking midfielder during his time developing at City, scoring eight times last campaign in the Premier League 2 for his side.
This goal tally would include a strike against arch rivals Manchester United, the young City team beating their Mancunian neighbours 6-0.
Before that, Breckin was also crucial in two separate Premier League title winning seasons at youth level – playing his part as both the City U18’s and U19’s won their respective titles.
Now, after succeeding in various age groups at the top flight giants, Breckin will test himself in men’s football with Wycombe Wanderers in League One.
Wycombe Wanderers Next Season
Wycombe fell to a disappointing 9th spot in League One this season just gone, the exit of Gareth Ainsworth to QPR disrupting the Chairboys and their progress.
Matt Bloomfield has only managed four wins since taking over from the much-loved Ainsworth, the 39-year-old will hope that he can put things right when the 2023-24 season officially kicks off.
He will be given time you expect as well, Bloomfield a legend during his playing days as Adams Park – making a staggering 557 appearances for the Chairboys, a lengthy stay that saw the midfielder even feature in the Championship for his current employers.
Signings into the building such as Kian Breckin does show Bloomfield addressing gaps in his squad, Breckin’s attacking qualities from midfield could well plug the gap left behind by Anis Mehmeti’s departure to Bristol City.
What Has Been Said?
Wycombe manager Matt Bloomfield spoke of admiration for his brand-new signing, praising figures behind the scenes at the Chairboys for getting this Breckin deal over the line.
He said: “Kian has been on our radar for a long time and we’re thrilled that we’ve been able to bring him here. Scott Mitchell, our new Head of Recruitment, has done a brilliant job in getting the deal over the line after weeks and weeks of hard work.
“There were a lot of clubs in for him but we know that the environment we’ve got here – in terms of the way we are going to play and the culture of looking after and developing players on and off the pitch – makes this an attractive place for players to come.
“He’s a really talented young lad with a big future in the game, and I know he’ll benefit from playing first-team football to add to the fantastic upbringing he’s already had in Manchester City’s youth setup.”
Writer’s View
Wycombe could well have pulled off a coup signing Breckin, the 19-year-old was subject to interest from clubs higher up the EFL ladder allegedly.
However, there is somewhat of a risk when you realise Breckin has only ever played in the youth set-ups at Manchester City.
It all depends on whether or not Breckin can continue to shine in packed out third tier grounds away from Premier League 2 football. If he can, Wycombe have pulled off a very impressive loan deal.
