League Two Club Chasing Former Sheffield United Defender

Former Sheffield United defender Kyron Gordon is subject to interest by Newport County, with Graham Coughlan eager to bring the 21-year-old centre-back to Rodney Parade according to journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon.

The young defender has recently been let go of by his boyhood club, Sheffield United not renewing Gordon’s contract alongside the likes of Billy Sharp and Enda Stevens.

However, it seems Gordon might well have found his next destination if the rumours are true surrounding the Exiles’ interest in the Sheffield-born defender.

Who Is Kyron Gordon?

Kyron Gordon started his career coming through the youth ranks at the Blades, going on to make his senior debut for Sheffield United in an EFL Trophy contest versus Carlisle United back in 2021.

He would later move out on loan to the likes of Boston United and Boreham Wood in non-league. But, Gordon would fail to make an impact when shipped out on loan from Bramall Lane – only making a combined seven appearances for both non-league sides.

Sheffield United would continue to give Gordon opportunities within the first team fold though, the young defender named in the starting line-up for three matches on the trot under Paul Heckingbottom last December in the Championship.

One of those starts did see Sheffield United concede four goals away from home versus Coventry City, a defensive performance Gordon won’t look back on with fondness.

Despite making six overall appearances in the second tier for the Blades last campaign, the 21-year-old now finds himself without a club as Sheffield United prepare for Premier League football next season.

Gordon could well drop down to League Two football if these rumours are true, Graham Coughlan desperate for new recruits at Newport County.

Newport County’s Current Situation

Newport County’s current situation is looking somewhat bleak from an outsider’s perspective, with a number of players leaving Rodney Parade in the off-season.

Mickey Demetriou is the latest face to leave the South Wales outfit, the 33-year-old – who also wore the captain’s armband last season – unable to agree new terms to keep him around for another League Two campaign.

Aaron Lewis has also headed for the exit door in recent weeks, the 25-year-old also turned down the opportunity to sign on the dotted line at Newport for a move elsewhere.

Therefore, the Exiles will hope that Kyron Gordon can sign for the club to soften the blow of recent big-name departures from Rodney Parade.

Writer’s View

Kyron Gordon will no doubt be gutted that he’s not had his contract renewed at Bramall Lane, leaving your boyhood club behind after coming through the youth system at the club will sting.

However, it shouldn’t have come as a major surprise especially with Sheffield United playing top flight football now next campaign.

Gordon will hope that if he does sign for Newport, he can show off how talented he is at the level and spur his new club on to a positive season in the fourth tier when football begins again.
