Mansfield Town are looking to bring back goalkeeper Christy Pym after a successful loan spell at the club last season, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
Pym signed for Mansfield last season on loan after falling out of favour at his parent club, Peterborough United. The 28-year-old stopper went on to have a good season and helped The Stags challenge for the playoffs before they fell short with just a game to go, and it is now being reported that the goalkeeper is wanted by Mansfield on a permanent deal.
Who Is Christy Pym?
Pym started his career at his hometown club, Exeter City. He came up through the club’s youth ranks, before going on to make 166 appearances for The Grecians, keeping 43 clean sheets and featuring for them in the playoffs twice.
He made the move to Peterborough United in 2019 on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Exeter. He went on to have a successful spell at Peterborough but it came to a bitter end with the goalkeeper falling out with manager, Darren Ferguson with the manager claiming that the player overstepped the mark in a dressing room bust-up following a defeat to Reading.
Pym made the move to Stevenage on loan in January 2022, making 23 appearances and keeping 5 clean sheets. Despite Grant McCann’s appointment at Peterborough, Pym’s future clearly wasn’t with the League One club and he made another loan move to Mansfield in the summer.
Who’s Interested?
Mansfield are very keen on a return for Pym this summer, who is listed for transfer at Peterborough, and it’s clear to see why with the goalkeeper having an impressive campaign last time out.
Nigel Clough is looking to take Mansfield a few steps further and achieve promotion to League One, which is something the club have been looking to do for some time, and the signing of a reliable keeper like Pym could be a big step towards achieving their targets for the upcoming season.
Writer’s View
Pym is easily a League One level goalkeeper based on his performances in previous seasons with Peterborough. Every team needs a reliable stopper, especially if they are looking to challenge near the top of the division and Pym provides Mansfield with that stability they need.
If Mansfield could get a deal done, it would be a good signing. He already knows the manager and the squad, so it would help with consistency and momentum moving into this season.
