Stevenage Part Of Trio Chasing Premier League Product

Stevenage face competition from League Two sides Salford City and Forest Green Rovers in the pursuit of Crewe Alexandra midfielder Tariq Uwakwe, as revealed by Football Insider.

The 23-year-old midfielder signed an 18-month contract with Crewe, which is coming to an end and he is yet to accept a new deal with the Railwaymen. The news that he is yet to accept fresh terms with the club has put many clubs across the EFL on alert, with a scramble appearing to be on to complete the signing of the midfielder.

Stevenage are preparing for a new season in League One after they achieved promotion last season, while Salford and Forest Green are preparing for life in League Two. The Gloucestershire club finished bottom of League One last season, in what can only be described as a dismal season and look to start working towards a return under Duncan Ferguson. Salford missed out on promotion last season, after defeat in the playoffs to Stockport County.

Uwakwe spent 15 years as part of Chelsea’s academy and over three seasons with the under-23 side made four appearances but never managed to break into the senior team. During a loan spell with Accrington Stanley, before he departed the London club in search of regular first-team football, Uwakwe made 21 appearances for the club, scoring four goals in that stint in League One.

The midfielder joined Crewe on an 18-month contract last January and made eight appearances in the second half of that League One season with Crewe. With the club relegated to League Two, he would go into the season in the fourth division and last season he made 40 appearances in all competitions for the Railwaymen, scoring once.

The former Chelsea academy talent was offered a contract by Crewe at the end of last season, however, he is still yet to put pen to paper on fresh terms with the club, who are preparing for another season in the bottom tier. And it is believed that other clubs are also monitoring the midfielder’s situation, which the League Two club are hopeful of resolving themselves. Manager Lee Bell has recently discussed his optimism of retaining the midfielder past the 18-month contract.

Uwakwe is yet to sign a new deal with the club, so of course, many are going to be monitoring the situation as they prepare for a new season. Stevenage would appear to be the most attractive option for the midfielder, given their league status compared to the other clubs mentioned.
