Peterborough United has made a late move for out-of-contract Cambridge United defender Lloyd Jones, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The 27-year-old is set to leave the U’s this summer due to the expiration of his contract, with League One club Wycombe Wanderers already offering the player a new deal. The former Liverpool product is now wanted by Posh boss Darren Ferguson, with Peterborough set to make a late attempt at stealing the player away.
Who Is Lloyd Jones?
Born in Plymouth and joining the Pilgrims’ youth setup at the age of nine, the centre-back caught the eye of Premier League side Liverpool at 15 and moved for a fee of £150,000. Moving for a high price, Jones quickly contributed to the Reds’ youth teams and captained the reserved team between 2013 and 2015.
Named in the match-day squad for a Premier League fixture, Jones was an unused substitute and was never featured in a game for Liverpool. Spending numerous years out of loan with Cheltenham Town, Accrington Stanley, Blackpool and Swindon Town, Jones struggled to settle and signed for Luton Town during the January transfer window in 2018.
Loaned again to Plymouth Argyle and Northampton Town, Jones got promoted with the latter and signed on after their promotion. Only lasting a year with the Cobblers, the defender has spent the last two seasons with Cambridge.
League One Experience
During his several loan spells and few permanent deals, the Englishmen has played most of his football in League One. With 132 appearances in the division, Jones has a great knowledge of the league and was even able to pick up four goals in 36 matches this past season from the centre-back position.
Writer’s View
While the defender has struggled to live up to his early hype as a youngster, Jones has still been a consistent and experienced performer. Starting to play more regular football over the last few seasons, a move to either one of Posh or Wycombe could be good for him.
With Peterborough expected to have a high turnover of players, Jones is close to entering his prime and could develop even more under Ferguson.
