Portsmouth Out Of Race For In-Form Striker

Crewe Alexandra striker Dan Agyei is not wanted by Portsmouth after previous reports linked the two, according to journalist Andrew Moon

With the League Two player’s contract set to expire this summer, Pompey has been one of the multiple teams linked with the prolific striker. However, those reports seem to be nothing more than rumours, with Portsmouth not moving forward on signing Agyei.

Who Is Dan Agyei?

A highly touted youngster with interests from West Ham and Chelsea as an 18-year-old, Agyei would end up singing for Burnley, where he made a rare appearance in the Premier League for the club. After various loans with Coventry, Walsall and Blackpool, the Englishmen failed to break into the team and moved to League One side Oxford United in the summer of 2019.

Struggling to make an impact for the U’s, Agyei only scored eight league goals during his two-and-a-half seasons with the Yellows, leading to a move to Crewe. Finally getting a consistent run in the team, the 26-year-old is coming off his best season to date with the Railwaymen, with 16 goals and five assists in League Two this year.

Where Will He Go?

With Pompey not interested in the player, Agyei is set to be without a team in a month. Following his 21-goal contribution season, Crewe has offered the player a new contract, however, the club are still waiting to find out whether the number nine will be playing for them next season.

Writer’s View

It isn’t too surprising Pompey has turned down the idea of signing Agyei, with the striker struggling during his previous five seasons in League One. The attacker has been used perfectly this season for Crewe as a striker and right winger, so I think returning or staying in the fourth tier is best for him.

Despite all the potential as a youngster, Agyei hasn’t lived up to that, however if he can enjoy another promising season in League Two, he may get another break at a bigger club.
